Stronger together: Retired officers across state create non-profit to help first responders in need

A team of three retired officers injured on the job have created a support group for other first responders in need across the country. Like most police officers, firefighters and paramedics across Wisconsin, they dedicated their lives to protecting others. But three former officer have now found a way to do just that in ways they never imagined by creating a non-profit called Injured Sheepdogs.

Fire destroys home in Sawyer County

A home north of Hayward is believed to be a total loss after a fire on Tuesday morning. The fire happened just north of Seeley in the Town of Lenroot, in Sawyer County. The Cable Fire Department, which aided the Town of Hayward Fire Department at the scene, said the first crews to arrive found the home fully engulfed in flames and began defensive operations.

Janesville Fire department: Dane County Bomb Squad called for report of explosives in east-side home

The public is being advised to stay away from the area of the 3400 block of Randolph Road as authorities responded late Wednesday night to a report of explosives in a basement. Janesville Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Bomkamp said in an email that the fire department responded to check on a man and that paramedics were told there were explosives in the basement of the home.

Eastside residential fire under investigation by Madison Fire Department

Fire officials are investigating after a structure fire on Madison’s east side left one home significantly damaged and two others with heat damage. Firefighters responded around 5 p.m. to the 2500 block of East Dayton Street for a report of a structure fire. While on their way, crews spotted black smoke coming from the area when they were still several blocks from the house.

Belgium Fire Department continues to clean up from 'large' barn fire

The Belgium Fire Department said they are still on scene of a large barn fire that started Tuesday night, June 23. Officials say the fire broke out at 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday. Crews still have a few more hours of clean up before wrapping it up. Officials say no firefighters or property owners were injured.

Merrill Apartment Fire Displaces Several Families

Several residents were displaced when a fire burned their apartment building in Merrill Tuesday. It happened around 5 p.m. Firefighters were called to the scene at the Park City apartments and saw flames and heavy smoke. There were no injuries, and they were able to get everyone safely out of the building.

Wisconsin Bill would provide grants for 'forever chemical' contaminations but take away the ability to sue polluters

A bill aimed at providing grants to communities affected by "forever chemical" contamination would take away the ability for cities and towns to pursue legal action against the companies or other entities that created the pollution. The bill, approved in an Assembly floor vote Tuesday, was authored by Elijah Behnke, R-Oconto, and would create a $10 million grant program for the 2021-23 biennium for communities struggling with PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Fond du Lac Fire Department to host pipeline safety training with TC Energy

TC Energy is partnering with the Fond du Lac Fire Department to host four separate pipeline safety trainings for both local first responders and public officials. During the multiple days of training, TC Energy will review the extent of their pipeline systems throughout the county, the basics of a transmission pipeline system, compression facilities, and reviewing how to identify and respond to a pipeline emergency.

Milwaukee house fire extinguished, no injuries sustained

Firefighters on Monday night, June 21 responded to the scene of a house fire near 9th and Keefe. As crews battled the fire they covered a neighboring home in water to keep the flames from spreading. Milwaukee fire officials say the fire caused property damage only. No residents or firefighters were injured.

Third and fourth swimmer pulled from Racine lakefront days after 2 drowning deaths

First responders raced to Racine's lakefront for the third time in as many days to rescue two more swimmers in trouble Monday, June 21. This followed the drowning deaths of two other children, a 10-year-old and 17-year-old. Emergency crews responded to an area of North Beach near the Racine Yacht Club pier.

Man in Richland County drowns in Wisconsin River while fishing

A man died Saturday after he fell into the Wisconsin River while fishing, Richland County authorities said. Officials said they got a call shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday reporting a potential drowning in the river near the Gotham Boat Landing. Witnesses told dispatchers they saw the man fall into river before the current pulled him under.

Brown County community rallying around one of its volunteer firefighters

A southern Brown County community is rallying around one of its volunteer firefighters. A few months ago, 27-year old Dillon Steinfeldt had surgery to remove a brain tumor and he is now undergoing radiation, with chemotherapy on the horizon. It was last fall when Dillon, who works for Wiese Farms in Greenleaf and serves on the community’s fire department, started to realize something wasn’t right.

Middleton house considered total loss after fire; no one hurt

Firefighters responded to a house fire in Middleton early Monday morning. Dane County Sheriff Deputies said the call came in at 3:39 a.m. in the 3800 block of Bay Laurel Lane. When crews first arrived, they found flames in the garage that were spreading to the rest of the home. Firefighters said the house is a loss, but all of the family and pets made it out safely.

'By the grace of God': Madison homeowner's quick actions save his house and himself after grill fire

Madison resident Jonathan Woods has just minor burns on his arm to show after his grill caught fire earlier this week. Woods suspects a faulty regulator was the reason for the fire, which shot from beneath the grill into his face before overtaking the grill itself. “I came out, opened the grill up, looked underneath, opened the tank up, listened very carefully just to make sure there was no leak or anything,” Woods said Saturday.

Wildfire fire risk remains high across large portions of Wisconsin

Don't let the green leaves on the trees fool you. Wisconsin is still facing drier-than-normal conditions, making wildfires more of a risk, and there are steps people can take to avoid inadvertently sparking one. Follow Up: Madison's Fire Department Tests Out Hybrid Fire Truck

A fire truck that performs in much the same way as its diesel-powered counterparts but boasts zero net carbon emissions is currently being piloted by the Madison Fire Department. Although the Pierce Volterra zero-emissions pumper won't be ready for a full rollout until about 2023, the Madison Fire Department is partnering with the truck's maker, Pierce Manufacturing, a subsidiary of the Oshkosh Corp.

Petition drafted for towns under Milton's joint fire department to join Edgerton Fire Protection District

The Milton Town Board during a special meeting Thursday night received a draft petition from the town attorney and board chairman in which the town of Milton asks the Edgerton Fire Protection District Board to allow the town to join the district. The draft could be modified to change the name of the town in the document so the others currently covered by the Milton Joint Fire Commission—Lima, Johnstown and Harmony—could use it, too.

Fond du Lac firefighters battle fire at smoke shop

Fond du Lac firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at a smoke shop Thursday morning. At 7:39 a.m., Fond du Lac Fire Rescue responded to Big Jay’s Smoke Shop at 111 S. Main Street. Crews found smoke inside the three-story mixed use building. Fire was located on the first floor inside the smoke shop.

'I'm very fortunate to be here today': Platteville burn victim shares his story about fire safety

A Platteville man is sharing his experiences with fire as a way of teaching fire safety during holiday weekends and summer months. Scott Travis was only 9-years-old when he had his first experience with fire. Attending the UW-Platteville homecoming parade, a friend of Travis threw a firecracker on one of the nearby floats.
