Rotting cookies to blame for Madison middle school evacuation

A Madison middle school was evacuated Friday afternoon after staff smelled a natural gas and firefighters traced the odor to rotting cookies. According to the Madison Fire Department's Public Information Officer, Cynthia Schuster, fire crews investigated the odor at 2:38 p.m. Friday at Blackhawk Middle School on Wyoming Way.

"It's just a mess:" Mom reacts to second Milwaukee playground lit on fire this month

For the second time this month, a Milwaukee playground was lit on fire. The second fire happened on Saturday at a playground in Smith Park near 34th and Sheridan. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said when deputies got to the scene around 9:29 p.m., firefighters had already put out the fire. The damage is extensive, with charred plastic and parts of the playground destroyed.

Fire destroys West Allis home, 1 taken to the hospital

Firefighters on Sunday night, Sept. 15 responded to the scene of a house fire near 120th Street and Schlinger Avenue in West Allis. The call came in around 10 p.m. "The front of the house was fully involved in the fire," said Jay Scharfenberg, West Allis Assistant Chief. Neighbors told firefighters one man ran back into the burning home to save pets.

Multiple departments extinguish fire at Lang Equipment in Marshfield

Ten fire departments responded to a fire Saturday at Lang Equipment in Marshfield. Crews received a call at 8:15 Saturday morning for a fire in the shop at Lang Equipment, which then spread to the building's ceiling. "The heat extended into the roof structure of the building," said Hewitt Area Fire Chief Brian Hafermann.

Pittsville Fire Chief continues fight for novelty lighter law

Majority of fires caused by children are started by a lighter and a lot of those lighters can look like toys. Fire Chief Jerry Minor from the Pittsville Fire Company has been on a mission for the past 11 years. He was inspired by his granddaughter. "She said very boldly grandpa you need to make a law," said Minor.

Firefighters fight bar fire in Shawano County

Paradigm donates money to Middleton Fire District, EMS

Software company Paradigm donated money to Middleton's local fire district and emergency medical services this week. According to posts from Paradigm's official Facebook page, the Middleton software company gave the Fire Department a check worth $18,890 for new equipment and kits. In a separate post, Paradigm shared that it also donated $18,500 to Middleton Emergency Medical Services.

Fire discovered behind Walgreens sign in Green Bay

Green Bay firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Walgreens on the city's west side Thursday night. Fire crews answering the call at 9 p.m. saw smoke coming from the sign above the entrance to the store at W. Mason and Oneida streets. When they got up there to open the wall, they found a fire burning behind the sign.

Garage total loss after fire in Chippewa Falls

A garage in Chippewa Falls is a total loss after a fire on Thursday morning. The Chippewa Falls Fire Department responded to a garage fully engulfed in flames around 7 a.m. Thursday near the corner of Elm and St. Augustine streets. After about 20 minutes, crews had the fire under control. There are no injuries reported.

Racine fire caused by unattended cooking damages community center, hurts firefighter

A fire at a community center in Racine caused major damage to the building and left one firefighter hurt. The Lakeview Community Center in Racine is damaged after a fire in the building Wednesday. The center is located across the street from the Racine Zoo. The Racine Fire Department says the Lantern Festival workers from China, who are putting up decorations at the zoo, were cooking inside the community center when they stepped out for a smoke break.

Madison Police and Fire Departments honors 9/11 with special memorial events

Town of Wheaton votes to leave Chippewa Fire District

The Town of Wheaton Board voted Tuesday night to leave the Chippewa Fire District, which would happen at the end of 2020. However, that vote is contingent on the town being able to secure EMS services from either the City of Eau Claire or the City of Chippewa Falls. According to Fire District Board President Dave Staber, the Town of Wheaton must give formal notice of leaving the fire district by October 1, at which time the town will still be part of the fire district for another 15 months.

Wisconsin fire departments struggle with firefighter shortage

Wisconsin fire departments are seeing a shortage of firefighters. In Baraboo, a "Firefighters Wanted" sign hangs from one of the firehouses. The chief there says only four of the 34 firefighters he has on staff are full time. He says firefighting just isn't a lifelong career anymore. One challenge is pay, another is the time commitment.

A recent rash of fire calls caused by spontaneous combustion has area fire officials shaking their heads at the rarity of several in a row. The act itself seems mysterious and complicated — a fire starting with no apparent source of ignition — but it's all very scientific. Combustion happens when a fuel combines with oxygen to produce heat from a recognizable source, like a match.

Firefighting foam found to have seeped into basement of home in northeast Wisconsin

State officials have detected toxic firefighting foam from a Marinette manufacturer in the basement of a nearby home — a finding that prompted the Department of Natural Resources on Monday to warn other residents to be on the lookout for similar signs of contamination. The potentially harmful foam containing perfluorinated chemicals had seeped into the basement earlier this year through cracks in the floor and walls, likely as a result of water saturating the ground due to wet weather conditions, the DNR said.

La Crosse Fire Department swears-in new firefighters

The La Crosse Fire Department is officially welcoming some new members to the department. Three firefighters were sworn-in Monday at city hall. They took the La Crosse Firefighters' Oath and got their badges. The recruits have actually been on the force for about a year, but just completed their one-year probationary period and were promoted to full-time, permanent firefighters.
