No injuries in 2-alarm fire at home on Milwaukee’s east side

Firefighters were called out to the area near Farwell and Curtis on Milwaukee’s east side for a two-alarm fire Tuesday night, May 7. Thankfully, there were no injuries. MFD officials said first responders found fire on all floors of the home. In fact, firefighters had to leave because the flames were so intense.

La Crosse Fire Department eyes regionalization, fire station improvements in 5-year plan

Focusing on regionalization efforts and improving fire stations are among the top priorities La Crosse Fire Department going into the next five years, according to a strategic plan that will go before the La Crosse Common Council Thursday. The plan, which covers 2019 through 2023, consists of six main initiatives, including an all-hazard response initiative that calls for the department to increase interoperability with regional departments, La Crosse Fire Chief Ken Gilliam said during a Tuesday interview.

Mabel Murphy's bar destroyed by fire in downtown Oshkosh

A well-known downtown Oshkosh bar was destroyed by a fire Tuesday morning. The fire broke out around 1:40 a.m. at an apartment building next to Mabel Murphy's bar in the 700 block of North Main Street, Oshkosh Fire Department spokesman John Holland said. By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire had already spread to the bar.

Pepin County man charged with arson enters plea

A man charged with setting a home he was renting on fire pleads not guilty by mental disease or defect. 62-year-old Brian Gillespie of rural Pepin County entered the plea during a preliminary hearing Monday. According to a criminal complaint, crews responded to a house fire in September in the Town of Frankfort.

As volunteer fire, EMS departments struggle with recruitment, lawmakers propose new bill

A new proposal at the state Capitol aims to incentivize people to become volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services workers in Wisconsin as many departments around the country struggle to find volunteers. "Right now, we have a huge problem with trying to get volunteers to participate in their local fire departments.

One person found dead in Sun Prairie apartment fire

Investigators are working to determine what caused a fatal structure fire that killed one person at an apartment building in Sun Prairie Sunday evening. Dane County Communications told News 3 Now that a call came in around 9:15 p.m. Sunday for a fire inside a building on the 100 block of South Bird Street with victims reportedly trapped.

40+ displaced, 1 injured following 2-alarm apartment fire in Milwaukee

A spokesman for the American Red Cross said more than 40 people were displaced by a two-alarm fire that engulfed an apartment building near 46th and Hampton Sunday, May 5. Desiree Flores only had to go a few feet, but it felt like miles as she screamed for help, trying to escape the smoke at her apartment building.

A team of firefighters put together a task force known as the Milwaukee Overdose Response Initiative (MORI).

Fox Lake Firefighters battle house fire

One man was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation following a house fire at 208 E. Cherry St. in Fox Lake on Thursday night. Fox Lake Fire Chief Aaron Paul said in an email that the Fox Lake Fire Department was paged to the house fire at 8:48 p.m. Upon arrival flames were coming out of two downstairs windows.

Barn leveled at Shawano-Oconto county line by fire

Nine rural fire departments battled a blaze that leveled a barn on the Oconto-Shawano county line Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured in the barn fire at Kuhn Farms, W13605 Deering Road in the town of Underhill, although about three head of cattle, a sow and piglets perished in the fire, Underhill Fire Chief Mark Winkler said Thursday.

Cooking fire displaces 15 people from home in Madison

A fire caused by unattended cooking displaced 15 people from their homes Thursday, according to a news release from the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters responded to 2215 Carling Drive at 5:44 p.m. Thursday after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke coming from the building. When crews arrived, they found smoke along the eaves of the building and a fire in the kitchen of a second-floor unit.

Fond du Lac firefighters, former Packers to face off in basketball game

Sports legends and Fond du Lac Firefighters Local 400 will face off on the basketball court to benefit the community Saturday. The game will begin at 5 p.m. at Fond du Lac High School, 801 Campus Drive, and feature Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue members, as well as a “former dunk contest competitor,” players from the Marian University basketball team and former Green Bay Packers, according a press release from Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue.

Milwaukee: Nearly half of police officers, firefighters live outside city, alderman says

Six years after a state law invalidated Milwaukee's residency requirement for city employees, nearly half of police officers and firefighters live outside the city, an alderman said Wednesday as a Common Council committee discussed efforts to incentivize living within the city limits. Ald. Michael Murphy said as he understood the numbers from the Department of Employee Relations, 42% of Milwaukee police officers don't live in the city and the number for firefighters is about the same.

Kenosha Fire Department responds to 10 opioid-related overdoses in four days

Kenosha firefighters responded to ten opioid-related overdoses in four days. It happened between April 25 - April 28. The Fire Department says two of the overdoses happened less than five minutes apart. The victims ranged in age from late 20s to mid-60s. Seven were men and three were women. They say everyone was revived with NARCAN.

Body found inside burning Milwaukee garage

Milwaukee firefighters found a body inside a burning garage early Wednesday morning. According to police, a parking officer spotted the fire behind a house near 15th and Burleigh streets around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday and called firefighters. A fire official told WISN 12 News the garage sustained relatively minor damage, leading investigators to believe someone set the body on fire.

Suspected arson at St. Matthew's Church in Allouez

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department and Brown County Sheriff's Department are working together to find the person(s) responsible in a suspected case of forced entry and arson at St. Matthew's Church. It happened around 1:41 a.m. Wednesday at the church on 2575 S. Webster Avenue when the fire department was called out for a fire alarm at the building.

Follow Up: Hales Corners officials stunned by fire chief's abrupt retirement ahead of performance review

Martin Freibergs, the fire chief in Hales Corners, has retired from his post effective immediately, hours before he was to receive a performance evaluation and two weeks after one of his captains resigned over accusations of abandoning his post and sexually harassing a subordinate. News of the retirement stunned Daniel Besson, the village president, and Ian Thomson, the chair of the police and fire commission, which was supposed to convene the evening of April 29 to evaluate Freibergs’ job performance.

Ex-girlfriend charged with homicide in deadly Montello fire

A woman accused in a fire that killed a man in Marquette County has been charged with three felonies. Court records said 42-year-old Frances Rittmann has been charged with first degree intentional homicide in the death of 43-year-old Daniel Gilmartin. Gilmartin died in a house fire on April 20. Rittmann has also been charged with two counts of arson.

Hales Corners Fire Chief says he's stepping down

There is a surprise change at the top for the Hales Corners fire department. Chief Martin Freibergs sent a letter to the village Monday saying he’s retiring from the department. It came as a complete surprise to the village president. The Police and Fire Commission met in a closed session Monday to talk about the letter.
