1 killed in Polk County camper fire

One person died Saturday after a camper caught fire in Polk County, Wisconsin. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said deputies were dispatched to a report of a camper fire at about 4:37 p.m. in the south ditch off Ravine Drive, about 2 miles east of the Village of Dresser. Upon arrival, emergency personnel extinguished the fire and discovered the vehicle was occupied and the occupant had died in the fire.

Garage and shed destroyed in Friday night fire in Somers

The cause of a fire that destroyed a shed and garage in Somers Friday night remained under investigation as of Saturday. The Somers Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched at 7:51 p.m. to 401 100th Ave. for a report of a shed fire. Dispatchers quickly provided additional information indicating it was a shed and a garage, which at the time they believed to be attached to the home, that were ablaze.

Semi trailer catches fire on I-94 near Eau Claire

At least half a dozen crews responded to a semi fire overnight on Interstate 94, near Eau Claire. The Eau Claire Fire Department says the driver was traveling westbound and was near mile marker 63, when he noticed the back end of the trailer on fire. The driver was able to disconnect the tractor from the trailer and call 911 for help.

Madison: Resolution honors Barr family, first responders

It’s been nearly one year since the devastating gas explosion in Sun Prairie which took the life of Sun Prairie firefighter Cory Barr. Legislators took the time to recognize Barr at the Capitol on Thursday afternoon. "But in that loss he saved many many lives," said Representative Gary Hebl, who represents Sun Prairie and authored the joint resolution.

Unsung Heroes event in Milwaukee honors first responders: ‘It isn’t a career it’s a calling’

Hundreds came together to honor first responders on Thursday evening, June 20. The Unsung Hero event, put on by the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association, recognizes firefighters, paramedics and police officers for what they do as well as unsung heroes who died in the line of duty. "This isn't a job, it isn't a career, it's a calling so we just do it because we love it and so when we have opportunities like this," said Michael Bongiorno, union president.

Family's home a total loss after structure fire in Rock County

The home of a family of four is a total loss after a structure fire in Rock County Wednesday, according to the Town of Beloit deputy fire chief. The call reporting a structure fire in the 7500 block of West Highway 81 came in at about 2:33 p.m. Wednesday. The Orfordville Fire Department called for mutual aid to assist with the response to the fire.

Wausau Fire Department kicks off annual Fill the Boot campaign

The Wausau Fire Department kicked off their annual Fill the Boot campaign during Concerts on the Square Wednesday evening. The money raised goes to supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association(MDA) which is a partner of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF). Wednesday’s event was the first Fill the Boot event of the year, there will be ones during Wausau Rib and Baloon Fest, Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, and the last one will be during the Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA.

Father's Day fire created a scar of ashes in Iola's downtown 20 years ago; The comeback started immediately

Days after a fire brought down a third of Iola's downtown, Kori Printz, her mom, dad and a good friend sifted through 6 feet of rubble and debris. Stevens Point emergency services are training for worst case scenarios

Beloit firefighters improve life-saving abilities due to Mercyhealth donation

The Beloit Fire Department is improving its life-saving capabilities thanks to a Mercyhealth donation of a mechanical CPR device. The LUCAS Chest Compression System has been awarded to 30 regional emergency medical service agencies by the Mercyhealth Development Foundation. The new mechanical CPR device is proven to help boost cardiac arrest survival rates and save lives, according to Jay MacNeal, Director of Mercyhealth's MD-1 Physicians.

De Pere Fire Rescue looking to curb cancer risks

De Pere Fire Rescue is taking a proactive approach to combating cancer risks. Eric Johnson, Assistant Chief of Training & Safety for De Pere Fire Rescue, will be hosting a special Safety Stand Down this week. Safety Stand Downs for fire departments originated in 2005 as a one-day event to cease training, and focus attention and efforts toward safety concerns that lead to Line of Duty Deaths (LODD).

Fire at Watertown home displaces 4 people, officials say

Four people are displaced from their home after a fire in Watertown. The Watertown Fire Department said it received a call that smoke was observed at a two-family residence at 604 N. Second Street around 8:10 p.m. Firefighters found smoke in the interior of the home on the second floor and put it out, according to a news release.

Fire destroys North Fond du Lac home, two dogs perish

A North Fond du Lac home was destroyed by a fire Monday night. Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Avenue after 8:30 p.m., according to a North Fond du Lac Fire Department news release. Crews tried to make entry into the home, but the conditions were untenable, so they fought the fire from outside the home, according to the release.

Not enough fire trucks in Menomonee Falls even after the board replaces one

Menomonee Falls took little action to deal with some broken fire equipment and not enough firefighters Monday night. Two weeks ago, Menomonee Falls Fire Department did not have any working fire engines. During a special meeting last week, the department said it would not have enough firefighters in a couple weeks.

West Allis man leaps from roof to escape house fire

A lack of smoke detectors contributed to a West Allis man getting trapped inside his burning home June 16, forcing him to leap to safety from the roof of the house. Shortly before 12:55 p.m., the West Allis Fire Department responded to a cottage in the rear of a property at 1308 S. 63rd St. with a “heavy fire” on the first floor, according to Assistant Chief Jay Scharfenberg.

Two teens taken into custody in relation to fire at Pembine railroad depot

The Pembine railroad depot is believed to be a total loss after a fire broke out late Monday morning. The building caught fire just before 11 a.m. Firefighters from the Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine Fire Department arrived, and found the building engulfed in flames. Crews closed a portion of Highway 141 as they battled the blaze.

Madison: Memorial service honors firefighter, dad this Father's Day following Ironman deaths

As many honor their dads Sunday, one father’s recognition went above and beyond. Friends, family members and colleagues celebrated and remembered the life of firefighter Todd Mahoney, one of two men who died earlier this week after being rescued from the swimming portion of the Half Ironman Triathlon.

Onalaska Fire Department celebrates 125 years of serving community

The Onalaska Fire Department held a 125th anniversary celebration at American Legion Post 336 on Saturday. After Appleton shooting, local agencies consider new approach for overdose response

First responders across the region may start searching or restraining patients before delivering life-saving medication for drug overdoses in the wake of a deadly shooting. Police and fire departments are re-examining their protocols after a man who received Narcan turned on first responders on May 15, fatally shooting an Appleton firefighter and injuring a police officer.
