Milwaukee firefighter calendar helps those in need

Firefighters with muscles, and puppies, in a calendar. This is how Milwaukee Fire Department members are raising tens of thousands of dollars to help firefighters during times of need. Two years ago Ignite the Spirit-Milwaukee launched as a nonprofit organization that supports firefighters when they can't be at work for family or personal health reasons.

Wood County firefighters practice grain bin rescues in actual silo thanks to grant

Firefighters from seven central Wisconsin municipalities got the chance this week to practice rescuing people in a real-life agricultural setting and not just with a simulator. The Pittsville Fire Department regularly uses a simulator to train firefighters on how to rescue someone caught in a grain bin.

Surveillance video shows man taking Big Bend fire chief's ATV, going on joyride

A man is facing criminal charges, accused of taking a fire chief's all-terrain vehicle during a festival in Big Bend. Surveillance images show the fire department's six-wheel ATV just outside the station in July during the Big Bend Rumble by the River. The chief was using it to deliver water and snacks to police and firefighters.

Plum City man named First Responder of the Year

Kent Gilles has been responding to 911 calls in one fashion or another for more than three decades. Wisconsin State Assembly recently awarded the lifelong Plum City resident with the 93rd Assembly District First Responder Award. The Wisconsin Assembly honors first responders from each district. Madison police investigating possible arson at home near east side

Officers with the Madison Police Department are investigating a house fire Monday night as a possible arson. Officers were sent to a home along the 100 block of North First Street around 8:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Benjamin Schwarz with MPD. No one was hurt in the fire, Schwarz said. If anyone has information about the fire call the Madison Police Department or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.

'Suspicious' fire damages garage in Jackson County

A fire that the Black River Falls Fire Department believes is "suspicious in nature" likely destroyed a garage Monday in Jackson County. The fire, reported shortly before noon, occurred in an unattached garage at N9193 Wren Lane in the town of Adams. Upon arrival, firefighters from the Black River Falls and Hatfield fire departments saw flames and found heavy smoke coming from the 40-by-40-foot building.

Janesville home, damaged by fire months ago, caught on fire again Sunday

A Janesville home damaged by fire months ago caught on fire again early Sunday morning. The home is located at 121 South Academy Drive, according to a release by the Janesville Fire Department. Firefighters arrived at the home around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, to see flames coming from a boarded-up house. The owner of the property told firefighters the home had been unoccupied since a fire back in April.

2 Madison firefighters suffer minor injuries in fires on Mifflin, Few Streets

Madison Fire Chief Steve Davis confirmed two firefighters suffered minor injuries in two fires on the east side of Madison on Saturday night. Officials received a call around 7:30 p.m. for a report of a building on fire on the corner of Mifflin Street and Few Street. When the first engine company arrived, Davis said there were fires on both Mifflin and Few, that he said started on Mifflin Street.

One person injured from Fond du Lac County garage fire, house and 2 vehicles total loss

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says a garage fire left the total loss of a house and two vehicles, along with leaving one person injured Sunday morning. Fire crews say around 10:30 a.m., they responded to the report of a fire at a residence located at W726 Birchwood Dr. in the Town of Osceola.

Oshkosh firefighter injured in house fire while two others are displaced

An Oshkosh firefighter was injured while extinguishing a fire Saturday afternoon. Firefighters say around 4:38 p.m., they responded to the report of a house on fire at 143 Arthur Ave. in Oshkosh. The Oshkosh Fire Department said the firefighter suffered minor injuries, but will be okay. No other injuries were reported.

Bellevue Firefighters use an unexpected approach to reduce response times

At the Village of Bellevue’s Village Board meeting this week a unanimous vote was made for a major change, at the Village of Bellevue’s Fire and Rescue Department. The board approved a three-year contract with Bellevue firefighters to staff the department at all times with personnel. The Fire Chief, Jack Mlnarik says the move will significantly cut response times for firefighters arriving to emergencies.

Update: Victims of deadly Fond du Lac house fire named, preliminary findings released

According to Fond du Lac Fire Rescue, the September 19 deadly fire was accidental. Preliminary findings of the investigation show the fire was consistent with, ‘improperly discarded smoking materials’. The home has been turned over to the property owner and their insurance carrier. Authorities have identified the three people that died in the fire: Taylor J.

Firefighters extinguish house fire in Wood County

Firefighters extinguished a house fire Wednesday night in Wood County. Fire crews responded to the blaze around 8:40 p.m. on Park Lane in the village of Arpin, according to Arpin Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Officials said there was smoke showing when firefighters arrived, and the kitchen was fully engulfed in flames.

An alarming discovery by Oshkosh Fire Department

An alarming reminder from the Oshkosh Fire Department to make sure you have enough smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home -- and if you do, make sure they're working. Oshkosh firefighters went into south-side neighborhoods on their "Detector Trek" over 3 days earlier this month. They installed 130 new smoke detectors and replaced 35 batteries in existing detectors.

Fire at Madison baseball stadium investigated as arson, $5K reward offered for information

PHOTO: There is now a $5,000 reward for information in an arson at a Madison baseball stadium last week. Firefighters were called out to the Madison Mallards stadium. They arrived to find the gift shop at the stadium on fire. The building suffered significant damage, including a collapsed roof. No one was injured in the fire.

Small fire, lots of water close two Port businesses

A small grease fire at Smith Bros. Coffee House Monday morning left two downtown businesses closed early this week. Duluth Trading Co. sustained some water damage but was expected to reopen Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 23, or early Thursday, Oct. 24, Assistant Manager Bill Connolly said. “We’re good to go,” he said Tuesday afternoon.

First responders rescue two trapped in SUV after Mount Pleasant rollover

Turning trauma into triumph in Sun Prairie

“Ever since I was adopted, the first toy we actually got taught us how to walk, and it was a firetruck,” said Elijah Iselin. Elijah, now 18 years old, knew as a young child that being a first responder was what he wanted to do with his life. It's a career path he's on with his twin brother, Eli. Both are now probationary firefighters with the Sun Prairie Fire Department.

Gehl Foods in Germantown evacuated for an electrical box fire; no one was injured

No one was injured, but Gehl Foods in Germantown was evacuated during an electrical box fire on Oct. 18. The Germantown Fire Department responded to a call at Gehl, at Fond du Lac and Church avenues, at about 4:50 a.m. While firefighters were still en route, dispatch notified them that the fire was out.
