South Carolina firefighter in critical condition after medical emergency at crash site

The Burton Fire District is without one of its brothers on Monday after a firefighter fell seriously ill during a call on Sunday afternoon. It all started around noon on Sunday when firefighters responded to a call about a motor vehicle accident in the Pinewood district of Beaufort. Shortly after they arrived at the scene, however, it was one of their own men who was in the most critical condition of all.

Destructive California wildfire overruns residents, 4 firefighters burned

Homes and businesses burned as a fast-moving wildfire fueled by heat and winds exploded in Lake County, forcing thousands to flee and leaving four firefighters with burns. The small town of Middletown was particularly hard-hit, with blocks of homes and other structures lost. Photos showed Middleton's main street on fire, with cars burning.

Indiana fire department lowers application age, aims for diversity

The South Bend Fire Department is looking for younger firefighters than ever before. “Our feeling was that if an individual is able to join the military at age 18, and take on the responsibilities associated with a job like that, that the same should hold true for the fire service,” said South Bend Fire Chief Steve Cox.

Louisiana mayor avoids house arrest over ongoing battle with firefighters

Mayor Mitch Landrieu will remain free after the Louisiana Supreme Court intervenes in the ongoing battle with fire fighters. The fight isn't over yet, but Landrieu won't be placed on house arrest. "I want to thank the Louisiana Supreme Court for its ruling," he said. "I have to say that I never imagined in my wildest dreams when I became your mayor that I could lose my freedom for doing my job and fighting hard to protect the taxpayers of the city.

Standard yellow wildfire gear not passing muster

Woman jumps from second story window, three firefighters burned in Indiana apartment fire

A woman jumped from a second story apartment window and three firefighters were burned in an apartment fire on the south side of Indianapolis. IFD was called to the Laurel Lake Apartments in the 8700 block of South Keystone Avenue around 2:47 p.m. on a report of heavy fire and black smoke showing from the second floor.

Colorado metro-area firefighters ordered to change uniforms to look less like police officers

Metro-area fire departments have ordered changes to uniforms in light of recent threats against law enforcement and as a way to keep personnel safe on the job. The West Metro Fire Department is having firefighters wearing a more casual look. The blue T-shirt has the words "Fire-Rescue" in large letters on the back and is the department's class "C" uniforms.

Report: Warning written on shaft door before Cincinnati firefighter fell

Firefighters wrote a warning on the door to the elevator shaft just two minutes before their their colleague Daryl Gordon opened the door, stepped in and fell to his death in March. "Do not enter, open shaft," the firefighters wrote on the light colored door in what looks like black marker. Smoke and poor visibility in the tight hallway may have prevented Gordon, 54, from seeing the warning written in what looks like black marker on the the light colored door.

Police: Florida man planned bombing in Kansas City during 9/11 memorial stairclimb

A 20-year-old Florida man has been arrested on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack using explosives at a Kansas City 9/11 memorial event this weekend. The FBI raided Joshua Ryne Goldberg’s home near Jacksonville and took him into custody. He’s accused of sending instructions on how to make a pressure cooker bomb.

Burned Fresno Fire Captain leaves hospital to continue rehabilitation at home

After nearly six months in the hospital, Pete Dern is home. The Fresno fire captain received severe burns when he fell through the roof while trying to put out a house fire. A huge crowd turned out to cheer him on as he left Community Regional Medical Center Wednesday afternoon. This day for Pete Dern started like the past 163 others, with a round of treatment and physical therapy.

Michigan firefighter dies after hit and run while collecting for MDA

Dennis Rodeman survived a tour of duty in Iraq with the U.S. Marines. He was killed on Wednesday while collecting donations for a charity in Lansing, the victim of what police are calling a deliberate hit-and-run crash on the city's south side. Rodeman, 35, was a seven-year veteran of the Lansing Fire Department.

North Texas volunteer firefighters indicted in chorizo sausage sexual assault

An Ellis County grand jury indicted seven volunteer firefighters, including the department's chief and assistant chief, on Wednesday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a fellow male firefighter with a chorizo sausage in January, according to media reports. Five firefighters with the Emergency Service District Number 6 Volunteer Fire Department in Waxachachie have been indicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault and attempted aggravated sexual assault: Keith Edward Wisakowsky, 26; Casey Joe Stafford, 30; Preston Thomas Peyrot, 19; Alec Chase Miller, 28; and Blake Jerold Tucker, 19.

Alaska firefighters threaten walk-off in snit with borough officials

Tension between the Talkeetna Fire Department and Matanuska-Susitna Borough fire chiefs potentially threatens to leave this Susitna Valley climbing and tourist destination without a hometown firefighting force. Texas fire chief stabbed multiple times responding to call

On Tuesday around 11 p.m., a Mitchell County Sheriff’s Deputy was called out to report of a man waving a shot gun in the road. The Deputy, called and asked Brandon Hale, Westbrook Fire Chief to keep an eye on the suspect from a distance until he got there. When the deputy had arrived the suspect had already made his way back to his residence, the deputy went to locate him.

Texas firefighters pay out of pocket to keep department going

Jimmy Ellis said he spent at least $3,500 out of his pocket last year to keep the West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department, noting that fighting fires in the county is one of his passions. Ellis, fire chief for the department, said without the firefighters infusing their own money, everything from maintenance to bunker gear suffers.

Connecticut Deputy Fire Chief Suspended 15 Days Without Pay

Deputy Fire Chief James McLoughlin has been suspended for 15 days without pay by fire officials who said he endangered firefighters under his command at a fire in April. McLoughlin was suspended Friday after an investigation found that he disobeyed orders and failed to exercise due care in providing for the safety of personnel under his charge at a fire, fire officials said.

Ohio firefighter tells others of cancer, their risk
