Houston fire chief leaving city for Arizona job

Glendale is getting a new fire chief. Terry Garrison, who has served as the fire chief for the Houston Fire Department since 2010, will be taking over as fire chief for the Glendale Fire Department on Nov. 2, city officials announced Tuesday. Garrison replaces Mark Burdick, who retired in May after 32 years with the department and 12 years as the chief, and Chris DeChant, who was serving as the interim fire chief.

Airpack Malfunction Cause Of Arkansas Firefighter’s Injury

An investigation into a Eureka Springs firefighter’s injury showed that mechanical failure was the issue. Rod Wasson was injured while working a fire on Aug. 29, sustaining respiratory injuries and spending weeks in a burn unit. Eureka Springs Fire and EMS interviewed Wasson and tested his equipment to determine what caused the injury.

Mystery ambulance rides cost Medicare $30M: auditors

Medicare paid $30 million for ambulance rides for which no record exists that patients got medical care at their destination, the place where they were picked up or other critical information. Urban explorers, trespassers may face steep rescue fines in Minneapolis

Urban explorers who may need complicated rescues will now have to pay a hefty fine for the service. In response to recent deaths and injuries due to falls in restricted spaces — including one in Southeast Como’s abandoned Bunge grain elevator near the University of Minnesota — the Minneapolis City Council approved an ordinance Friday that gives the city the authority to charge rescue fees to trespassers.

New Jersey firefighter says hair regulations are gender discrimination

A firefighter who is fighting a department policy that he said would force him to cut off his ponytail took his case directly to City Council, claiming gender discrimination. Timothy Gay, an Elmira Street resident and one of the few members of the department who actually lives and pays taxes in the city, said the policy was directed at him, as he is the only male member of the department with long hair.

Pennsylvania firefighters cited during fundraiser

If Shickshinny state troopers were likened to a Christmas character over the weekend, Scrooge would be a good description, according to Holly Morris. DC Fire and EMS chief to ask for third party ambulance help

DC Fire and EMS Chief Gregory Dean will ask the D.C. council on Tuesday for authority to hire an outside company to provide ambulance service to help relieve his overtaxed fleet. 3 groups will use $5.9M to train firefighters for oil trains

Three groups will receive $5.9 million in federal grants to train first responders to handle railroad incidents involving crude oil, ethanol and other flammable liquids. The U.S. Transportation Department announced the grants Monday. Concerns have been growing about these shipments because the number has surged, and there have been several fiery derailments involving crude oil in recent years.

VIDEO: Man sets his car on fire at Detroit gas station because of a spider

A man's fear of spiders nearly caused him to set a Metro Detroit gas station on fire. Instead, he set his car and a gas pump on fire. WJBK-TV FOX 2 News reports the man saw a spider on his car's gas tank while he was at a gas station in Center Line. He then did something that most people understand is obviously not smart.

Arkansas water authority seizes gear from fire department over pool fill-ups

Employees of a rural water district confiscated equipment from the Beaver Lake Fire Department after discovering some of its firefighters tapping into a fire hydrant to fill swimming pools, an official with the water district said. The department hadn't notified the Benton County Water District it planned to tap the hydrant or arranged to pay for the water, said Eddie Cooper, water district manager.

4 dead in collision between tour vehicle and charter bus on Seattle Bridge

Crews began removing the wreckage from the Aurora Bridge Thursday evening. Police officers and other officials watched as the Duck vehicle was loaded onto a flatbed tow truck. New York EMS chief killed in crash between ambulance and backhoe

For his entire adult life, Barry Miller was a giver and “a huge figure in the town of Bergen.” That was evident in the outpouring of grief in Bergen Wednesday after Miller, chief of Fire Department Emergency Medical Services and a county coroner, was killed on his way to a call in Riga. “His connection to the community is indescribable,” said Donald Cunningham, town supervisor and close friend of Miller’s.
