Louisiana fire chief riding bike to calls after Hurricane Ida damages bridges

There's a volunteer fire chief who is riding is bicycle to answer calls for help because the bridges in his town are out. In a post, the State Fire Marshal talked about what Lockport Fire Chief Armand Autin is doing to serve his Lafourche Parish town. "Because the bridges are out due to Ida, Chief Autin is driving his truck to the closest bridge, then riding his bicycle across the bayou to respond to incidents," the post says.

Washington fire & rescue introduces department's first all-female crew

For the first time in Graham Fire & Rescue's history, the department has an all-female crew. "It can be a challenge to really have women even be interested in the fire service," said Graham Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Jill D'Len. "Not a lot of women think that it's a career that they can possibly pursue.

Video captures home explosion in New Jersey after flood prompts evacuation

VIDEOS: A house exploded in New Jersey Thursday morning just hours after it was evacuated due to flood waters from Ida, and a person who was traveling in the vicinity was injured by the blast. It happened around 5:44 a.m. on River Road near Whittier Street in Rahway. Several residents posted on social media that they heard or felt the explosion, which was caught on Ring video from a nearby home.

How a vision for the 9/11 Memorial blossomed into a piece of New York's everyday fabric

PHOTOS: This is wrong, Michael Arad thought. It was 2003. Arad was 34, a few years removed from graduate school and working as an architect for New York City’s housing department when the call went out for designs for a memorial at ground zero. An open competition would produce a winning design. Architect Daniel Libeskind the designer of the Freedom Tower, had charge of the master plan for the site and had set the design guidelines for the memorial.

South Carolina student trades football helmet for firefighter helmet

Clemson recruited Noah DeHond to play football in 2017. The Rochester, New York native played on the offensive line. He was redshirted his freshman year before suffering a neck injury in 2018. He never got a chance to play in a game. “I have no regrets about my time with the football team,” DeHond said.

Nebraska town's first fire engine joins Stuhr Museum collection

PHOTOS: Cairo’s first fire engine, a 1936 Dodge fire truck, has found a new home at Grand Island’s Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer. It was the first fire engine purchased by the Village of Cairo and belonged to the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department. “They have put a lot of work into restoring it and love it very much, and they’re donating it here so we can share it with everybody,” Stuhr Curator Kari Stofer said.

Report: More than 70% of New York City firefighters in 9/11 response diagnosed with related health conditions

More than 70% of New York City firefighters who responded to scenes following Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks have been diagnosed with 9/11 related physical or mental health conditions, according to a new report. The FDNY's report on the health impacts of rescue and recovery workers found that more than 11,300 members have been confirmed with at least one health condition covered by the World Trade Center Health Program, including asthma, cancers post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse disorder.

New training equipment in Virginia shows changing fire behavior

Boat fire at Massachusetts marina considered a ‘multi-million dollar loss’

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The cause of a fire that destroyed a large boat at Pope’s Island Marina Monday evening is under investigation, according to New Bedford Deputy Fire Chief Scott Kruger. Kruger tells 12 News the boat has been deemed a “multi-million dollar loss.” The boat contained 500 gallons of fuel, according to Kruger, which made fighting the flames difficult.

VIDEO: Fire truck hit by semitrailer in South Carolina

All eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 26 near exit 35 in Spartanburg County were blocked Monday due to a crash involving a semitrailer and fire truck. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the fire truck was in the area putting out a vehicle fire when it was hit by the semitrailer. Troopers said no one was in the fire truck when it was hit.
