ICU nurse gets life-saving kidney transplant from Florida firefighter

A Bradenton firefighter has received the county’s highest honor for a firefighter after donating a kidney to a fellow firefighter’s wife. As a firefighter and former Marine, Lieutenant Derek Foss is always ready to answer the call. "Make a decision as it comes in," he explained. He says he didn't need any convincing on the decision to donate a kidney after learning he was a perfect match to be a kidney donor to Brianne Baker.

Nico Smith didn’t want to merely make a living, but to “have a living.” She wanted to feel alive. That desire prompted her to quit her $116,000 a year job as a lawyer in February 2020 to strike out on her own. At least 16 people are dead after Kentucky's catastrophic flooding, and the death toll is expected to rise

California city appoints first woman ever to become city's fire marshal

The city of Oakland has a new fire marshal, Felicia Bryant, who is making history as the first woman to ever hold the position. "I was born and raised in Oakland," she said. Bryant is an 18-year veteran of the department and a trailblazer, just like her great-grandfather, Bill Williams. He was one of the first Black firefighters hired by the Oakland Fire Department in 1920.

Surprising Discovery: 1967 Indiana fire truck found in Mexico

PHOTOS: 2020 Indiana University Graduate Olivia Rusk was in Hidalgo Mexico earlier this year as an English Teaching Assistant for COMEXUS Fulbright-Garcia Robles. One day she was out exploring nearby towns. 4-alarm fire ravages building in Massachusetts

University of Arizona, Tucson Fire Department research helps reclassify firefighters' cancer risk

Studies by University of Arizona Health Sciences, in collaboration with Tucson Fire Department, have helped provide evidence that occupational exposure does pose a cancer risk to firefighters. Findings from these studies contributed to a larger body of evidence that led the International Agency for Research on Cancer to reclassify firefighters' occupational exposure from "possibly carcinogenic" to "carcinogenic.

Cigarettes fueling rise in Minnesota's preventable fire deaths

Drought conditions around the Twin Cities metro have substantially increased the risk of fires, a problem Minnesota's struggling with this year. A Lamborghini burst into flames after running past a stop sign, crashing into a vehicle, and going airborne to collide with a home’s roof and wall. Clarence Middleton said he was in his backyard when he saw “a big truck” flying towards him with “a bunch of debris and dirt flying right behind it.” Middleton ran towards the mangled Lamborghini to help the driver.

Stolen New York fire pickup tracked down with GPS; equipment a ‘total loss,’ officials say
