Maine firefighters use duct tape to help put out a fire at a metallurgy company

Firefighters battled a smoldering fire for nearly five hours at Elmet Technologies at 1560 Lisbon St. Monday afternoon before employing a duct-taped pole to reach burning material in a duct and extinguish it. At 4:19 p.m., the department responded to reports of heavy smoke blowing out from a duct near the top of the building.

Texas Firefighter Who Died From Off-Duty Accident Helps Others as Organ Donor

VIDEO: Massive fire rocks chemical plant in Ohio

A fire at a chemical plant in Madison Village caused massive fireballs to shoot into the air Monday night. The fire took place at ChemMasters located at 300 Edwards Street. According to Madison Village, dispatch crews were called to the scene about 9:50 pm. The fire chief at the scene told 19 News that the fire initially started in a storage unit where plastic containers were housed.

Indiana police, fire departments get embedded athletic trainers

New York City Housing Authority proposes new policy that would ban e-bikes, lithium-ion batteries from buildings

VIDEO: An increase in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has sparked a call for better education and enforcement efforts from New York City leaders. There were 104 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in 2021, leading to 79 injuries and four deaths, according to the FDNY. Legislation to help first responders and educators buy homes has rare bipartisan support

The HELPER Act is a bipartisan legislation bill and home loan assistance program backed by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff to allow law enforcement, firefighters, EMS and educators of grades K-12 to purchase homes in the communities they serve. Health First is 1st in Florida to offer whole blood on air ambulances

Fire department in Tennessee reports over 100 overdose incidents so far in August

During Overdose Awareness Month, Knoxville Fire Department is working to shed light on the frequency of overdoses in Knox County. From Aug. 1-12, KFD responded to a total of 101 reported overdoses, according to their Twitter posts. Video captures house explosion that killed 3 in Indiana; coroner identifies victims

Louisiana city renews search for remains of 4 victims in 1973 UpStairs Lounge fire

Nearly a half-century after arson killed 32 people in a New Orleans gay bar, the City Council has renewed the search for the remains of four victims, including three who were never identified. The UpStairs Lounge burned on June 24, 1973, killing 31 men, including two whose mother died with them, and injuring another woman and 14 men.

Wisconsin fire department citizenship requirement dropped by Fire and Police Commission

The Milwaukee Fire Department has opened the door for more people to become firefighters. Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said the change is a long time coming. 'Earliest detection is best;' New firefighter app aims to better track cancer risks

It’s the deadlier than fire, on-the-job danger every firefighter faces - cancer. The CDC has found cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters, and the World Health Organization has now defined firefighting as a cancer-causing profession. In May 2021, News 13 debuted its investigative documentary Deadlier than Fire, focusing on the need for presumptive worker’s compensation benefits for North Carolina firefighters diagnosed with cancer.

VIDEO: 1 employee hospitalized after massive fire engulfs Illinois recycling center

Nearly 200 first responders are on scene after a five-alarm fire ripped through a Metro East recycling center. ‘Getting harder and hotter’: Phoenix fire crews race to save lives in America’s hottest city

PHOTOS: The 911 call came in about an elderly man who had fallen outside a storage facility in central Phoenix. The fire crew, who are also paramedics, found 80-year-old Noel laid on his back on the concrete ramp under direct sunlight; he was weak, thirsty and very hot.
