Village, city of Pewaukee agree to tentative fire and EMS contract

After a three-year stalemate, the village has agreed on a number with the city of Pewaukee for a tentative new fire and emergency medical services (EMS) contract. That number is $1.361 million for a five-year contract, which includes a 3-percent increase yearly and an opt-out clause after 18 months. Administrative and inspection fees are also included in the contract number.

Fire ignites in Kenosha store’s trash compactor

Firefighters extinguished a blaze inside a giant trash compactor bin at local store that sells outdoor equipment Tuesday night. The Kenosha Fire Department responded to the fire at Gander Mountain, 6802 118th Ave., at about 6:10 p.m., at a loading dock on the northeast side of the store, Battalion Chief Wes Bernhardt said.

Council approves joint fire and rescue contract with Beaver Dam and towns

A new three-year fire and rescue joint contract between the city of Beaver Dam and five towns was approved by Beaver Dam Common Council Monday. Council President Jon Litscher complimented Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel and the town representatives who make up the Beaver Dam Community Fire and Rescue Association for renegotiating the contract.

Wind speeds complicate early morning fire in Chilton

VIDEO: High wind speeds were a factor in the difficulty of fighting an early morning fire in Chilton on Weeks Road. The fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The fire itself was called in by a passerby and when firefighters arrived a shed and barn were engulfed in flames. About 50 steer were inside the barn, all of which got out of the barn safely.

Beloit Fire Department hosts annual pancake breakfast

Bellies and hearts were full at the Town of Beloit Fire Department’s 26th annual pancake breakfast Saturday. Loyal fans returned for another year to see their neighbors and show support for firefighters. Held at Beloit Turner High School, the event featured a feast of whole hog sausage and all-you-can-eat pancakes made by seasoned experts.

Janesville man whose house struck by lightning says it was "like a bomb went off"

VIDEO: A man whose home was struck by lightning overnight Tuesday tells 27 News "it was like a bomb went off." Wes Slater lives at 200 Kellogg Avenue in Janesville. He and his dogs were inside when the lightning struck and the explosive sound woke him up just before 1 Tuesday morning. While Slater didn't want to speak on camera, he was grateful he and his dogs got out safely, and is now looking forward to some rest before dealing with the aftermath.

Minocqua fire station comes in well under estimate

The town of Minocqua's fire department expansion committee approved Friday a recommendation to the Minocqua Town Board to accept the bid of just over $2.4 million from Boson Company in Marshfield to construct a new fire station. Minocqua town electors voted in October to build the fire station, which will be next to the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce on Minocqua's south side, for no more than $3.

South Area Fire District earns what chief calls "gold standard" accreditation

South Area Fire District (SAFER) is re-certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services. Chief Matt Savage said Monday the accreditation is the "gold standard" of pre-hospital EMS care and his 60-member department is the only one to achieve the accreditation in Wisconsin. "We have held this honor since 2010.

Crash causes gas leak on Madison's west side

A car crash Sunday morning at a west side intersection caused a natural gas leak, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 10:35 a.m. to the intersection of Watts Road and Struck Street on a report of a car crash and the odor of natural gas. There were no injuries in the single-vehicle crash, but the driver reported running over a small tree, a natural gas pressure monitoring station and a pressurized gas pipe and then into an Alliant Energy transformer box that services the surrounding commercial district.

Preventing the unthinkable: Eagle Point tries out water rescue gear

Luke Anderson was excited after trying out a water rescue suit on the ice of Glen Loch, just north of Chippewa Falls. “This is wonderful,” he said of one of three wet suits purchased by the Town of Eagle Point Fire Department with a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “Awesome. You don’t even feel the cold water on you,” said Anderson, who is a volunteer for both the Eagle Point and Town of Tilden departments.

Three hurt as blaze destroys Kaukauna home

Three people were hurt during a house fire in Kaukauna Sunday. At about 5:21 p.m., the Kaukauna Fire Department was called to a home at 802 Crooks Avenue. The department says firefighters arrived to find heavy fire in the kitchen and smoke coming out of the front and rear doors and the eaves of the roof.

Passerby notices fire inside Mayville Fire Department station

VIDEO: A fire broke out at the Mayville Fire Department on Horicon Street late on Saturday, March 4th. Officials said shortly after 10:00 p.m., a passerby saw flames inside the building and called 911. The fire was confined to one apparatus. The station had heavy smoke. The fire station was ventilated and clean up was underway Sunday.

Deer-Grove, Cambridge and Marshall EMS services eyeing merger study

They’ve been talking since 2015 about a three-way merger. Now the Deer-Grove, Cambridge and Marshall EMS services are taking a significant step toward that possibility. In coming weeks, they expect to jointly put out a request for proposal (RFP) seeking a consultant to study the idea. A consultant could be on board this spring.

Walker orders flags to half-staff in memory of Spring Valley fire chief

Gov. Walker has ordered flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of an area fire chief who died last weekend. Terry Shafer, 62 of Spring Valley, died unexpectedly on Saturday. According to his online obituary, he served more than 30 years as fire chief of the Spring Valley Fire Department. He decided to step down as chief last year, but was continuing to serve in various roles with the department.

Beaver Dam firefighters rescue 2 people from apartment fire, including person hanging out window

Beaver Dam fire officials responded to an apartment fire to find someone hanging out of a window, trapped by smoke. The fire took place Thursday afternoon, March 2nd on Lake Crest Drive, near the Beaver Dam Bay Marina. According to the Beaver Dam Fire Department, several people were injured and taken to the hospital -- but they are expected to survive.

Darien Fire Department gets thermal imaging cameras

Darien Fire/EMS Department recently placed five personal thermal imaging cameras in service for crew members. The thermal imaging cameras where purchased using funds donated by Thelma Meyer in memory of her late husband, Darien Fire Department Captain Richard Sawyer. During the years that Captain Sawyer served with the Darien Fire Department no one would have dreamed of being able to see through smoke, but today that is a reality for every firefighter responding on the fire engine in Darien, said Darien Fire Chief Justin Schuenke.

Ice shoves crash into Lake Winnebago boathouse, sparking fire

VIDEO: While the shores of Lake Winnebago see ice shoves annually, massive ice mounds and strong winds this week are providing a stark reminder of just how powerful those shoves can be. State Senator Roger Roth witnessed it first hand, as he watched an ice shove destroy his boathouse Wednesday afternoon.

Kenosha Fire reports fewer seek firefighting jobs

At most businesses, 144 applicants for eight job openings would be an embarrassment of riches. But for the Kenosha Fire Department, that number of applicants is a steep decline from years past, leaving department leaders wondering how they can encourage more to consider careers as firefighters. Chief Charles Leipzig said they would have 400 applicants for job openings 10 years ago.

Back to School: Merrill firefighters learn importance of keeping accurate, clean public records

"Back to school," battalion chief Mike Drury said with a laugh. All 23 members of the crew sat through lessons on sentence structure and writing in the active voice.

Driver extricated from car hanging off Kaukauna bridge

PHOTO: No one was injured after a car was found hanging off the Veterans Memorial Bridge Wednesday afternoon. Rescue crews say they were called to the bridge at 1:15 p.m. Upon arrival, one of the passengers was able to get out of the car. Another person was unable to due to the position of the car. Firefighters used a 9,000-pound side winch to stabilize the car and safely extricate the driver.
