Streetcar derails in Milwaukee; firefighters get it on track

AFirefighters were called in to help get a derailed Milwaukee streetcar back on track. The streetcar, known as The Hop, derailed Thursday afternoon on Milwaukee's east side. The car remained upright and appeared to be just slightly off the track. One of the Milwaukee Fire Department's heavy rescue units was able to lift the car up and place it back on the tracks using specialized equipment.

Janesville apartment fire averted by sprinklers

A potentially disastrous fire was thwarted by working sprinkler systems late Wednesday night at an apartment building at 221 N. Franklin St., according to Captain John McManus of the Janesville Fire Department. Firefighters responded a call at about 9:18 p.m. Wednesday. McManus said a basket of clothing had started on fire in a closet when the sprinklers kicked in and doused the flames.

Dryer fire cancels classes at Lineville Intermediate School in Howard

The Howard-Suamico School District decided to cancel classes at Lineville Intermediate School on Thursday following a fire in the building Wednesday night. Teachers and other Lineville staff also should not report to school. According to the school district, the Howard Fire Department responded to an alarm at the school at 2700 Lineville Rd.

Fire destroys barn in rural Holmen

Nine area fire departments responded to a barn fire late this afternoon. They were called out just after 4 o’clock to County Road TT in Holmen. Seven of the fire departments went to the scene of the fire, while two of the departments went to the Holmen Fire department to cover any other fire calls. A tractor caught fire inside a barn where hay was stored.

South Milwaukee firefighters reunite with dog rescued from Lake Michigan ice shelf

There was a sweet reunion at the South Milwaukee Fire Department Tuesday, Feb. 11. A 12-year-old bulldog named "Tuff" came back to see the firefighters who rescued him. On Jan. 31, Tuff got stranded on an ice shelf near the Lake Michigan shoreline in South Milwaukee. Firefighters were called and they put their professional skills to work, bringing Tuff back to shore.

2 displaced after North Fond du Lac house fire

Fire officials say two people have been displaced following a residential fire late Tuesday morning. According to Fire Chief Jake Flaherty, crews were called to a home on Maine Ave. shortly after 11:30 a.m., and were on the scene for about four hours. Flaherty says a man home at the time was able to safely escape, and his girlfriend wasn't home at the time of the incident.

Portage County home a complete loss after fire

A home at 5370 Clarices Circle is a complete loss after a fire Tuesday. The fire started shortly after 10 a.m. in the garage and spread to the house, said Hull Fire Chief Ken Sadogierski. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but Sadogierski said there were several explosions that they believe were from propane tanks or ammunition.

Fire damages downtown Eau Claire business

A Monday night fire caused $150,000 damage to The Metro event center, 201 E. Lake St. The Metro is the former home of the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley. Smoke was coming from the two-story building when firefighters were called to the business at 10:06 p.m., according to Joe Kelly, batallion chief of the Eau Claire Fire Department.

Small fire extinguished at Stratford business

An employee was able to put out a small fire at a business in Stratford Monday afternoon. The Stratford Area Fire Department received a call for a fire at the Pro Vision Co-Op Tire Shop shortly after 2 p.m. The fire was reportedly in the walls and when crews arrived on scene they made sure the fire hadn't spread.

Fire burns at Grand Chute business

The Grand Chute Fire Department says a machine at a business caught fire late Sunday night. A caller reported flames and heavy smoke coming from an overhead door on the front of a building on the 500-block of N. Bluemound Dr. just before midnight. Fire crews from Grand Chute, Appleton and Fox Crossing responded and quickly extinguished the fire on a large CNC machine.

2 displaced, no injuries during Green Bay house fire

Fire officials say no one was home when a fire broke out on the 1400 block of S. Locust St. late Monday morning. According to the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, crews were called to the home shortly before 11 a.m. When they arrived, officials say smoke was coming from the eaves and roof, and flames were coming from a basement window in the back of the home.

Kenosha County first responders credited with saving 2-day-old infant's life

A 2-day old infant's life was likely saved thanks to the actions of a deputy and firefighters, authorities said Monday. Kenosha County Deputies and Salem Fire Department responded to a home on the 6600 block of 236th Avenue on Sunday for reports of a baby not breathing. A 2-day old infant was reportedly not conscious, not breathing and turning blue, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department.

One dead following Clintonville house fire

Clintonville Police say one person is dead following a structure fire near Clintonville Middle School early Monday morning. Officials say crews were dispatched at 2:14 a.m. for a possible fire. Police say there was a language barrier with the caller that made it difficult to obtain information or location.

Igniting the spirit: Milwaukee firefighter's mission to help fellow firefighters inspires others

Firefighters are known for being there to help in an emergency, but who’s there when firefighters need help? It’s a question one Milwaukee firefighter named Joe Flick has asked himself a lot. It inspired him to launch an organization called Ignite the Spirit Milwaukee. “I do believe we're all kind of cut from the same cloth,” Flick said about his fellow firefighters.

Milwaukee ambulance carrying patient involved in crash at 6th & North, 3 taken to the hospital

An ambulance carrying a patient was involved in a crash on Milwaukee's north side. Firefighters say it happened at 6th and North shortly before 9:00 p.m. Friday. The fire department says it is a private ambulance. Two paramedics inside and a patient were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

Milwaukee Fire Department mourns loss of devoted member, Darrin Jones

Members of the Milwaukee Fire Department paid their respects to one of their own. Darrin Jones, 53, served nearly three decades on the department. He died unexpectedly on Feb. 1. Friday, a procession of fire trucks escorted his casket to the Krause Funeral Home for the visitation. “Everybody’s missing Darrin,” said Brent Jones, Lieutenant with MFD.

he Merrill Fire Chief says one person is in stable condition following an overnight house fire in Merrill. Crews responded to the 100 block of East Riverside Avenue around 1 a.m. Friday. Chief Josh Klug said house is still standing but the first floor is badly damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Five people displaced after downtown Madison fire

Firefighters are at the scene of a fire in downtown Madison Thursday evening. Dane County dispatch said it received a call at 5:41 p.m. for a report of a structure fire on the 100 block of North Franklin St. The Madison Fire Department reports five people have been displaced, but no one was home at the time of the fire.

Beaver Dam loosens residency requirements for police and fire personnel

Beaver Dam emergency response staff will be able to live further away from where they work. The city’s police and fire commission approved a policy change Wednesday that will allow police officers, firefighters and paramedics to live within 45 miles of city limits. The previous limit was 15 miles. The change was meant to help better recruit candidates for positions.

DNR asks fire departments statewide to report use of firefighting foam containing PFAS

The Department of Natural Resources is asking fire departments around the state to report their use of any firefighting foam that contains perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances. A news release said the University of Wisconsin-Madison Survey Center is conducting a statewide survey on behalf of the DNR to locate the usage of PFAS in firefighting foams.
