County in New York giving tax breaks to volunteer firefighters to fill depleted ranks

Greene County will give volunteer emergency responders a break on property taxes in an attempt to recruit and retain firefighters and EMTs as their numbers continue to decline across the state. The move takes advantage of a law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in December giving counties a standardized way to give the breaks.

VIDEO: Manufacturing facility destroyed after massive fire near Chicago

A manufacturing facility in Chicago Heights was destroyed in a massive fire Monday morning. The fire broke out at Morgan Li around 6 a.m. in the 1100 block of Washington Avenue. The 500,000-square-foot facility was completely engulfed in flames and quickly spread to neighboring buildings. No one was inside the plant at the time of the fire.

Washington fire department switching to safer firefighting foam

VIDEO: The Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) announced Monday it replaced its firefighting foam with new, safer foam. The new foam does not contain perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs), chemicals that have been linked to contaminated water supplies. Washington state passed the Firefighting Agents and Equipment Law in 2018.

Rural Metro in Tennessee releases app to help customers contact fire department, commend firefighters and more

VIDEO: Rural Metro released an app to better connect with customers and help make sure they had information about their fire department. The app is called "Rural Metro Fire — Knox Co. TN" and is available on the App Store and on the Google Play Store. Customers can download it to find news about the fire department, learn about smoke detectors, find tips to prevent fires and peruse monthly information about calls crews respond to.

Man takes woman's car before stealing Texas ambulance and leading police on chase

VIDEO: A man was taken into custody Monday after being accused of stealing an ambulance and leading police on a chase through the Houston area. Houston police said the man, who appeared to be in the middle of a medical crisis, first stole a vehicle from a woman in the Kroger's gas station on West 11th Street and North Shepherd Drive.

California firefighters head to Turkey for relief aid after 7.8M earthquake that killed more than 2,600

VIDEO: The Los Angeles County Fire Department is sending a task force to Turkey after a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck on Monday morning, crumbling homes, killing more than 2,600 people and leaving devastation across a wide portion of the country and into northern Syria. VIDEO: Explosion possible in wake of Ohio train derailment involving hazardous materials

As federal investigators worked to find out why a 150-car train derailed in northeastern Ohio, the state's governor warned late Sunday that unstable temperatures in a car transporting chemicals could lead to an explosion. The area most at risk of being affected by the Friday crash, that within a 1-mile radius of the crash in the village of East Palestine, was evacuated by early Saturday and remained off-limits, officials said.

States Strive to Reverse Shortage of Paramedics, EMTs

Low wages, a lack of work-life balance and burnout are among factors driving emergency medical services personnel around the country to quit ambulance duty. Last year, the turnover rate for full-time emergency medical technicians, known as EMTs, was 36% and for full-time paramedics, it was 27%, according to an American Ambulance Association survey.

Large fire destroys American Legion in Illinois

New Delaware Fire Chief Makes History

As we enter Black History Month, a local fire company makes history here on Delmarva. The Carlisle Fire Company recently appointed Shawn Hinton as chief. Growing homeless crisis in California producing bigger impact on Sacramento firefighters

A machete attack and a fire captain punched in the face — it's what Sacramento Metro Fire is facing with a growing homeless crisis. They say their jobs are getting more and more dangerous. ‘A tremendous investment’: Alabama fire department receives $1.2 million fire engine

PHOTOS: The city of Opelika just added a new fire engine to its fleet. The new truck, which cost $1.2 million, is called an aerial. It’s the first of four new firetrucks that will arrive this year. The total price for all four firetrucks will be close to $3 million. Opelika Fire Chief Shane Boyd said the new aerial is a multi-purpose truck with a pump, a water tank, a water hose, an aerial device, and ground ladders.
