VIDEO: 1 dead, 2 injured after car flips off ramp in Washington, D.C., police say

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a deadly car crash on Interstate 395 in Southwest D.C. on Sunday. At approximately 7:45 p.m., a Hyundai Elantra was traveling south in the Ninth Street tunnel, police said. The driver of the car began to take the westbound ramp and struck the jersey wall twice for reasons unknown, causing the car to crash over the wall and onto the southbound I-395 below.

Big Fires in 1889 devastated three cities in Washington state

PHOTOS: When Washington became a state in November 1889, that wasn’t the only big news story that year. In the final spring and summer of Washington’s territorial era, big fires ravaged major sections of downtowns on both sides of the Cascades, from Seattle, to Ellensburg, to Spokane. Seattle’s fire struck on the breezy, blue-sky afternoon of Thursday, June 6, 1889.

VIDEO: Massive fire engulfs former church building in Alabama neighborhood

Fire crews in Birmingham are currently investigating the cause of a major fire of a church in Ensley. The incident took place at the intersection of Five Points West Avenue and Avenue S. No injuries have been reported. Local resident and Ensley Highlands neighborhood president, Antwon Womack, shed light on the history of the church, describing it as a community pillar in the past.

Northeast Ohio fire department using jet skis for faster water rescues

Los Angeles Fire Department station struck by vehicle

VIDEO: A single vehicle crashed into a Los Angeles Fire Department station in Sun Valley early Monday morning. A car crashed into the front of LAFD Fire Station 77, located at 9224 Sunland Boulevard, at the intersection of Tuxford Place, at about 5:26 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Dept. Two people in the car suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization, according to the LAFD.

Agencies break ground on first-responder housing project in Idaho

The development partners of an eight-unit housing project for Wood River Valley first responders have commenced construction and anticipate the project will be completed by the end of the year. Sun Valley City Administrator Jim Keating announced the news in a project update to the Sun Valley City Council and Mayor Peter Hendricks on Thursday.

Firefighters more likely to die by suicide than on duty; Yoga helps recruits in Nevada handle stress

The City of Las Vegas’s Fire & Rescue is working toward addressing firefighter suicide rates and mental health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance report firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue’s behavioral health administrator, Jeff Dill, said the national suicide rate for firefighters has increased.

VIDEO: Large fire burns house boats at marina in Arizona

Fire crews have put out a large fire that engulfed several boats at the Lake Powell marina on Friday afternoon. The blaze started at the B Dock at Wawheap Marina. Video shows heavy black smoke and flames covering some boats docked and several floating in the water. Officials say between 10 to 12 boats have burned so far.

Texas fire department trains as sumo wrestlers with Shogeki Sumo

Volunteer firefighters, emergency service workers in New York county get a tax break

Niagara is the latest county to provide property tax breaks as a way of attracting volunteer firefighters and emergency service workers. The county legislature approved a new law allowing a 10% property tax exemption on property owned by a member of a volunteer fire company, fire department or voluntary ambulance service, or spouse of a member, at its May session.

Remembering the plane fire in Ohio that claimed 23 lives 40 years ago

VIDEO: On June 2, 1983, 23 passengers died in a fire onboard Air Canada Flight 797. The flight was coming from Dallas, Texas, and heading to Toronto, Canada, when the cabin crew discovered smoke in a rear lavatory. According to the aircraft accident report, the crew attempted to extinguish the hidden fire before contacting air traffic control and declaring an emergency.

‘Bit of a mystery’: 7 Arizona firefighters test for elevated levels of arsenic

Firefighters in Casa Grande received concerning test results when nearly half of a hazmat team tested for elevated levels of arsenic during their annual heavy metal testing. None of the seven firefighters knew they had high levels of the naturally occurring chemical that can cause cancer. Six of the seven are stationed at the same firehouse in Casa Grande.

North Carolina firefighter survives 8th heart attack, saved by fellow firefighters while responding to call

VIDEO: 4 townhomes destroyed, 2 damaged after fire in Pennsylvania

Six townhomes caught on fire in Cecil Township on Wednesday. Crews were called to the scene at Georgetown Estates on Farm Road near Valley Brook Country Club. The call came in around 3:45 p.m. Four townhomes were destroyed while two others were damaged. Officials said the fire started in the garage of an end unit.

Brick by brick, this teen is building Lego firetrucks from every department in Massachusetts

PHOTOS: In the hands of 17-year-old Cristian Sciaudone, tiny pieces of plastic become collectible objects of memorabilia. During the pandemic, the North Andover teenager decided that he was going to create a Lego model of a firetruck from each of the 363 fire departments in Massachusetts. As of this spring, he’s made it to more than 240 departments and pieced together more than 250 trucks.

This Day in History: Universal Studios fire in California destroys musicians’ master recordings

VIDEO: Firefighter hurt, stores destroyed by massive fire in New York

A firefighter has been injured and multiple stores are destroyed after a massive fire started in the Bronx late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. Officials say the flames destroyed a tire shop and flower store on the Cross Bronx Expressway Service Road just before 11 p.m. Tuesday. Video shows how large the fire was from far away, with its thick plume of black smoke rising above the flames.
