Surge in fire department staffing across California county as new funding kicks in

It’s a hot market for firefighter jobs throughout Sonoma County with dozens of recent hires and more openings available as numerous agencies hustle to fill slots and bolster staffing. Jobs are open at small and large agencies — even PG&E is hiring its own firefighting staff, which is a first for the utility company seeking at least 50 firefighters for high fire danger areas in the state, including the North Bay.

Massachusetts Town To Fired Firefighter: Sorry

Brookline will issue an apology to Gerald Alston, the former Brookline firefighter who the town fired after he came forward to report a supervisor had left a voicemail with a racial epithet on it. Town Meeting members discussed at length whether to issue a formal apology before the vote. Some argued it could hurt the town, which is still facing litigation from Alston.

VIDEO: Ride4Relief kicks off in South Dakota promoting mental health support for first responders

A nationwide "Ride 4 Relief" is kicking off in Sioux Falls Thursday. Jeff Shepard is driving through 35 states spreading awareness about the stresses and dangers police officers, firefighters and other first responders face and how they can affect mental health. New Jersey governor voices support for unions during firefighter convention in Atlantic City

Gov. Fire Protection District in Colorado To Settle Retiree Lawsuit For $1.2M

The West Metro Fire Protection District has reached an agreement to pay 70 retired firefighters and their families $1.2 million to settle a class action lawsuit over retiree health benefits. “This was never about the money involved”, said retired firefighter Tim O’Hayre, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Kentucky fire department at lowest number of firefighters in years

One extra body makes a difference when responding to a fire. Paducah’s fire chief says it takes everyone on a shift to respond to a fire. A report by the International Association of Firefighters, a union representing firefighters in the U.S. and Canada, says the city of Paducah is recommended to have 24 people per shift.

Firefighters Better Able to Track On-The-Job Exposures to Deadly Carcinogens and Other Toxins

Firefighters on the front lines protecting their communities now have a valuable tool for recording and providing evidence of work-related exposures to help protect them against deadly cancers and other occupational hazards in the fire service. The new National Fire Operations Reporting System (NFORS) Exposure Tracker is now available as an app for firefighters, paramedics or officers to create a personal diary for logging exposure and incident details in a private, encrypted and secure online environment.

Texas fire department implements in-house mental health plan

Firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty, Katy Fire Chief Russell Wilson said. To help his staff with the stress of their jobs, he has brought a comprehensive mental health initiative called Operation Resilience Program to the Katy Fire Department. It includes a peer support program, family days, workshops and evidence-based training on coping techniques.

Arizona state budget helps firefighters pitching in during wildfire season

The $11.8 billion budget passed by Arizona lawmakers Monday will double a revolving account set up in 2016 to pay local fire agencies that respond to fires on federal land. Fire agencies throughout the state have long sought an increase to the $10 million stabilization fund and are pleased to see the fund boosted to $20 million, Green Valley Fire District Chief Chuck Wunder said Tuesday.

California Battalion Chief: First Oceanside Fire Station to Catch Fire in Decades Leaves Building 'Uninhabitable'

A fire broke out at an Oceanside Fire Station Tuesday morning and left behind a building that its battalion chief called “uninhabitable.” A driver reported the fire just before 10 a.m. after passing by Oceanside Fire Station 3, located on Oceanside Boulevard. Distracted drivers an increasing threat to first responders

New research shows that many drivers are profoundly distracted by their phones when they're going past first responders working accidents on the roadways. New research from the National Safety Council found 71% of drivers admitted to taking photos and texting while driving by emergency workers; that's nearly triple the 24% who admitted to doing it under normal driving conditions.

Texas firefighter dies from cancer caused by heat, smoke exposure

A Fort Worth firefighter died Friday from pancreatic cancer caused by heat and smoke exposure. Capt. Keven Teague was a firefighter in Fort Worth for 24 years, Fort Worth Fire Chief Jim Davis said in a Facebook post. Teague, 46, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two weeks ago and was being treated at a local hospital.

Town in New York considers giving firefighters housing priority

Southold Town officials said they are considering giving top priority to local volunteer firefighters who are seeking affordable housing. Southold Supervisor Scott Russell, who suggested the idea at the town board’s May 21 work session, said volunteer firefighters provide a vital service and he would further discuss a proposal with the board in the future.

South Carolina volunteer firefighter killed in ATV crash

A Midlands man who was also a South Carolina firefighter was killed in an ATV crash Saturday night, the Kershaw County coroner said. EMS and Fire Service members found Stephen Campbell, one of their own, when they responded to a 911 call just before 9 p.m. about an ATV that flipped over, Kershaw County Coroner David West said Sunday in a news release.

VIDEO: Massive Fire Destroys Ambassador Hotel in Dallas

More than 100 firefighters battled a massive fire at the Ambassador Hotel near downtown Dallas Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported and the fire is under control. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded about 1:30 a.m. to the hotel at 1312 South Ervay Street. The six-story building was engulfed in flames and firefighters shifted to a defensive position.

State of Ohio considers major changes to fireworks laws; Current law unpopular, but fire chief says new bill no better

Firefighters and pyrotechnics manufacturers agree state laws allowing Ohio residents to purchase but not launch fireworks in-state are ineffective, but disagree on how to fix them. Illinois House sends bill increasing fines for 'Slow Down or Move Over Law' violations to governor

A bill that would increase penalties for Scott’s Law violations has passed both chambers of the General Assembly. Democratic Rep. Marcus Evans, of Chicago, said the 2002 “Slow Down or Move Over Law” was passed in memory of the death of Lt. Scott Gillen, a firefighter who was killed by a passing motorist while assisting a traffic accident.
