A helicopter crashed on top of a building in Midtown on Monday afternoon. It happened at around 1:43 p.m., according to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro. The message from Montgomery County’s fire union to Governor Larry Hogan was direct and alarming. The county’s emergency radio system is on the brink of “catastrophic failure,” and officials must find a way to replace the system “as quickly as humanely possible.” A three-page letter sent June 5 by International Association of Firefighters Lodge 1664 President Jeffrey Bundle to Hogan details concerns that the radio system is long overdue for an upgrade.

There are still questions on why a group of people allegedly threw water balloons, and shouted offensive comments at firefighters. The incident happened while those firefighters were responding to an EMS call last Sunday at Ford Park. The Shreveport Police is investigating. The Maryland Heights Fire Department (MHFD) is mourning the loss of one of their own Saturday. Officials said firefighter and paramedic Chris Moore died Saturday morning at his home in Eureka. His death is still considered in the line of duty as he fought fires both on Thursday and Friday. Regulations allow up to 24 hours after a firefighter leaves a fire for deaths to be classified in the line of duty.

The way Tuolumne County provides fire protection services is not sustainable without changes that could prove to be controversial, according to a new independent study that will be discussed at a public meeting on Tuesday. There was a shortfall of more than $1.5 million in the county’s overall fire protection system in 2017 that was expected to grow to more than $2 million by 2022, the study determined.

Sparks from a hammer driving a metal stake into the ground ignited a 2018 blaze in Northern California that killed a firefighter and became the largest wildland fire in state history, officials said Thursday.
