Study: Fire services in California county aren’t sustainable, need change

The way Tuolumne County provides fire protection services is not sustainable without changes that could prove to be controversial, according to a new independent study that will be discussed at a public meeting on Tuesday. There was a shortfall of more than $1.5 million in the county’s overall fire protection system in 2017 that was expected to grow to more than $2 million by 2022, the study determined.

Fighting wildfires, North Carolina pilots fear close encounters with drones

Pilot Robert Delleo has been flying for the N.C. Forest Service for 10 years and says it’s not unheard-of to hit a bird as you’re skimming just above the treetops over a wildfire. What he really worries about, though, is the possibility of hitting a drone, which fly at that same altitude and are just as impossible to see when you’re moving at more than 200 mph.

1 dead, 5 injured after storm topples crane into Texas apartments

VIDEO: A woman died and at least five more people were injured Sunday afternoon when a crane fell into an Old East Dallas apartment building as storms pummeled the Dallas area. Crews searching Elan City Lights apartments found the woman inside an apartment after the crane crashed into the east side of the building, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

New Jersey first responders who volunteered at Ground Zero could get accidental disability pensions

Rhode Island firefighter's amputation blamed on out-of-service ladder truck, other issues

A Pawtucket Fire Department injury report obtained by Target 12 blames an out-of-service ladder truck, a lack of funding to repair it, training, and a number of other issues for an injury to a firefighter that resulted in him losing his foot. The firefighter's foot was amputated 15 days after he was injured during a May 15 triple-decker fire at 579 Central Ave.

Louisiana firefighters stage daring rescue as woman's car is swept away on flooded street

VIDEO: A pair of Baton Rouge firefighters are being praised for taking swift action after a woman was carried away by flood water Thursday morning. WBRZ was rolling as the driver's sedan went underwater at the Acadian underpass near I-10. As the woman's vehicle is carried away in the several-feet-deep water, two Baton Rouge firefighters rush in to save the driver trapped inside.

California's largest wildland fire started by hammer sparks

Sparks from a hammer driving a metal stake into the ground ignited a 2018 blaze in Northern California that killed a firefighter and became the largest wildland fire in state history, officials said Thursday. The blaze started July 17, 2018, in Mendocino County and quickly spread, aided by dry vegetation, strong winds and hot temperatures.

New Jersey paramedic fired for performing Reiki on patient wins $90,000 verdict

The paramedic faced a dilemma. After responding to the home of a woman with an open wound in February 2016, he was ordered by a doctor back at the hospital to drill a catheter into her arm. But the woman, a believer in alternative medicine, refused the treatment. Instead, the paramedic offered to perform Reiki, a Japanese healing technique based on “life force energy” that many doctors believe lacks scientific credibility.

California: Motorcyclist killed in crash with fire engine, 3 firefighters hurt

A motorcyclist died after a collision with a fire engine in Orange on Wednesday, June 5, and three firefighters were injured. The crash happened near the intersection of Collins Avenue and Roberto Street, a dispatcher for the Metro Cities Fire Authority said. The motorcyclist was transported to a hospital, where the man was later pronounced dead, Orange Police Lt.

Alabama: New partnership puts physicians in city ambulances to assist beach residents

The closest hospital to Alabama’s beaches is in Foley, which “can seem like an eternity” during an emergency along congested Alabama State Route 59. The trip is especially treacherous on summer weekends, when tens of thousands of motorists converge upon or leave the Gulf Coast. The state’s transportation director recently called it a “dangerous situation,” prompting him to elevate a new Intracoastal Waterway bridge atop the list of road construction priorities in Alabama.

A 74-year-old woman who was injured while hiking Piestewa Peak Tuesday afternoon was lifted from the mountain by helicopter, during which the basket she was in began spinning out of control. Off-duty Maryland firefighter killed in apparent tractor accident

An off-duty Frederick County, Maryland, firefighter died after being pinned beneath a tractor in Montgomery County. The death of 60-year-old Drue Jones was confirmed in a tweet Tuesday from Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said earlier that they were responding to a remote area of farmland in Dickerson.

Ohio first responders closer to new PTSD claims; business groups still opposed

Ohio first responders are once again butting heads with the business community over workers’ compensation benefits for post-traumatic stress disorder. A fight that has repeatedly arisen over recent years is again heating up, after House lawmakers added a provision to the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation budget allowing police, firefighters and emergency medical workers to file claims without a correlating physical injury.

Emergency responders conduct largest-ever search and rescue exercise; Mission involves 11 different agencies

Nebraska Task Force 1 (NE-TF1) is making history as one of eleven emergency response teams participating in the nation's largest civilian based search and rescue exercise ever done in the United States. Over 1,500 trained emergency responders will be stationed at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center (MUTC), Indiana, for the exercise on June 1-7.

Montana firefighters to help fight Canadian fires

Hotshot crews from around western and central Montana are headed to Canada this week to help fight wildfires that have forced thousands from their homes. The Northern Rockies Coordination Center (NRCC) confirmed the Helena Hotshots, Bitterroot Hotshots, Lolo Hotshots, and the Flathead Hotshots are all being dispatched to Alberta on Wednesday, June 5.
