After fatal fire, Pennsylvania city council wants to finalize day care ordinance to improve safety

A proposed new ordinance aimed at improving safety at Erie day care facilities could be on Erie City Council’s agenda by the end of November. City Council President Jim Winarski, at a Thursday evening study session at City Hall, said the panel wants to finalize the ordinance as soon as possible. Full church honors California fire captain who died in line of duty

A decorated Merced County Cal Fire captain was laid to rest Thursday after a traditional processional through the city of Merced and services at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Capt. Paul Rotondaro died in a traffic crash on Highway 140 near the Gustine airport, according to the California Highway Patrol.

President Of Largest Flight Attendant Union Wants FAA To Ban E-Cigs Over Battery Fire Concerns

VIDEO: The president of the largest flight attendant union wants the FAA to ban e-cigarettes from planes because their batteries could be a fire hazard. FAA data from 1991 through this August shows at least 48 e-cigarette related smoke or fire incidents at airports or on planes. An emergency in Kentucky 911 Center? As number of calls jump, more staff needed

Lexington’s 911 emergency center is struggling to keep up as fewer call takers and dispatchers attempt to answer a swelling number of calls and help an increasing number of police and firefighters, city officials said Tuesday. The Enhanced 911 Center answered 477,711 calls last year. Of those, more than 217,000 are 911 or emergency calls.

Rescue squad in Vermont launches successful apprenticeship program

“The unicorn program.” That is how a recent student with the Bennington Rescue Squad described the organization’s year-long apprenticeship program. Bill Camarda, Deputy Executive Director, oversees the only EMS apprenticeship program registered with the state of Vermont. Bennington rescue launched its program in December 2018 and is in the process of interviewing applicants for its third cohort, said Camarda.

Spray-on skin helps Missouri firefighter heal from serious burns

2 firefighters stabbed in Florida, suspect taken into custody

Alaska fire department budget $4 million short, prompting equipment shutdown policy

The Municipality of Anchorage has come up short on the operating budget for fire services through the remainder of 2019. Pennsylvania municipalities receive nearly $450,000 in annual state aid for fire relief associations

Municipalities in and around our coverage area have received about $450,000 in state aid to go towards their local volunteer fire relief association, according to the auditor general's office. The Greater Shenandoah area, the borough and West Mahanoy Township, received a combined $29,590.33, an increase of $2,154.

Rural firefighters promote farm safety through national program that began in Wisconsin

Flames, heavy smoke destroy several shops in Seattle; Two-thirds of Seattle's firefighting fleet responded

Florida fire department looks at staffing concerns after Disney gondola incident

Some people were stuck on the Skyliner at Walt Disney World for up to three hours on Saturday night. Indiana fire departments get 10K safe drug disposal pouches

The safe drug disposal program in Indiana is expanding. Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says it’s a partnership with the Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative (RALI) Indiana and the Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana (PFFUI). The expansion will provide Indiana fire departments with an additional donation of 75,000 safe drug disposal pouches to help fire departments across the state in the fight against the opioid epidemic.

South Carolina firefighter dies after being struck by semi while on the job

A Lexington County firefighter has died after he was struck by a semi while trying to help victims of a car crash. The fire service said Lexington County Fire Service Fire Engineer Paul Quattlebaum, a 22-year veteran of the agency, had been dispatched to a service call around 3:30 p.m. Friday. While he was headed to the scene, he and his partner saw a car crash in the 5200 block of Fairview Road.

Over 5,000 people attended the 38th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Maryland

The 38th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service took place over the weekend at the National Fire Academy in Maryland. The sound of bagpipes and drums could be heard for miles as people gathered to remember and honor 119 fallen heroes from 2018 and previous years. The rainy weather didn’t stop over 5,000 people from silently listening to fire officials talk about brave men and women from all over the nation, who died protecting their community.
