Fire department battles flames, smoke at northeast Houston shopping center for several hours

VIDEO: Houston Fire Department crews are working to control a three-alarm fire that continues to burn at a shopping center early Thursday. The fire was first reported around 1 a.m. at the Jensen Square complex, located on Jensen near Hurley. The shopping center has multiple shops and businesses. At this time, there are no reports of injuries.

Voluntary North Carolina firefighter cancer registry shows 7 cancer cases at one department

Over the years, materials used to build houses and other buildings have changed, with some of those materials containing carcinogens that firefighters and first responders inhale when responding to calls and cleaning up after the fire is out. The result, officials say, has been higher rates of certain types of cancer and death rates for firefighters and first responders.

Tennessee Senate passes bill to provide volunteer firefighters with $600 training stipend

The Tennessee Senate passed a bill that would aid volunteer firefighters in the state. Senate Bill 778 would provide volunteer firefighters with an annual payment of $600 upon completion of at least 30 hours of training. “Our volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line and give up their time to keep our communities safe,” said Bell, a former volunteer firefighter in Tennessee.

4-Alarm Fire Destroys Historic New Hampshire Condominium Building

A deck fire at a historic home in Downtown Concord kept Concord firefighters busy on Wednesday and eventually led to four alarms and — and fire crews from around the capital region assisting city firefighters. Around 12:30 a.m., firefighters were sent to 32 Merrimack St., a four-unit building, for a report of flames seen from a deck.

Texas fire department sees its most diverse candidate pool ever, but there’s more work to do

This year, the Austin Fire Department said it has gotten a 10% increase in interested African Americans compared to 2019. Its largest demographic group is Hispanic candidates — a more than 21% increase. Overall, nearly 75% of people who submitted a cadet interest card are diversity targets, which means they belong to a minority group.

Historic bell salvaged after Vermont church burns

One of the artifacts pulled from the rubble of the Williamstown Federated Church is linked to a famous name in American history. Deaths of 3 New York firefighters spark mass cancer screening in city fire department

Firefighters didn’t worry about getting cancer when Tim Downes joined the Syracuse Fire Department in 1985. He’d wear a helmet and other gear caked in soot, carbon and other toxic residue from fires and think nothing of it. “You were supposed to be salty,” he says. Historic landmark designation impacting Wisconsin fire department plans

Texas fire chief calls fire at Lone Star Brewery ‘suspicious’; full investigation to follow

Food on the Stove to Test New App for Maryland Firefighters

Healthy, balanced meals were harder to come by for firefighters in the D.C. region until Food on the Stove came along. But starting next month, the nonprofit will beta test a new app that will pave the way for a healthier lifestyle among firehouses in Prince George’s County and beyond. Black Saturday: One of the largest fires in New York history in photos

Nearly 60 years ago, 100 homes were destroyed, as three different fires simultaneously burned through multiple Staten Island neighborhoods. On April 20, 1963, also known as Black Saturday, a total of three large brush fires began in Rossville, Tottenville, and Mariners Harbor. In their wake, the fires caused more than $2 million of property damage and left over 500 people homeless.

Officials: 2 injured in fire at New York home

VIDEO: A two-alarm fire in Gerritsen Beach left two people injured Thursday, fire officials say. The fire started at a house on the corner of Knapp Street and Avenue W at around 8 p.m. Citizen app footage shows the fire tearing through the home. Crews were eventually able to get the fire under control and extinguish it.
