Fire destroys multiple buildings at former cereal factory in Massachusetts

Five buildings were destroyed during a fire at a former cereal factory in Orange Saturday. According to State Fire Marshal’s Spokesperson Jake Wark, crews were called to 16 West River Street at around 11:45 a.m. Saturday for reported smoke and flames at the vacant mill building. Four additional buildings were also on fire, including one on East River Street.

Dispatchers in Florida county start using video 911 system

VIDEO: Dispatchers in Volusia County can now see an emergency in real time using a video 911 system the sheriff’s office unveiled this week. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said they’re just starting to use it and an incident on Thursday is a great example of when Volusia residents would need it. Witnesses driving on I-4 Thursday afternoon called 911 and took video of a minivan that was swerving into the shoulder, the other lane, and even the median.

Firefighter injured in assault at Indiana fire station

Indianapolis firefighters stopped a man with a knife who attacked them after chasing a woman into an east side fire station on Saturday. At around 1 p.m., a firefighter was backing his fire department vehicle into a bay at IFD Station 11, located at 1715 E. Washington Street near Southeastern and South State avenues, when a woman ran past the vehicle and into the station.

New York fire boat remains ready to serve the public

PHOTOS: Iterations of Last Chance, Clayton’s fire boat, have been serving the north country for over 60 years, going where fire trucks can’t go. As Clayton Fire Department treasurer and boat Capt. Justin Taylor boarded the boat recently, his pager went off, his phone sounded, and the fire whistle blared through the streets of Clayton.

CDC Study: 97% Of Americans Have Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ In Their Blood

Nearly every American, the CDC says 97%, has some level of “forever chemicals” in their blood because they are found in so many household products. Now, scientists in Arvada are making it easier for you to test your levels at home. PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are commonly known as forever chemicals because they can build up in the body over time.

Philadelphia firefighters battle large junkyard fire

VIDEO: Fire crews battled a large fire in a Port Richmond junkyard Thursday afternoon. Crews were called to Aramingo Avenue and Wheatsheaf Lane about 4:30 in the afternoon. They were met with heavy flames. Plumes of thick, black smoke could be seen billowing across the river and into New Jersey by drivers along northbound I95.

West Virginia firefighters participate in unique electric vehicle fire training

As more and more electric vehicles hit the road, first responders are preparing to adapt to the unique emergencies the new technology could bring. Huntington firefighters had the opportunity on Thursday to get hands-on training in this and became the first career department in the country to do so with West Virginia University's unique program in high demand.

Four FDNY Firefighters Die From 9/11-Related Illnesses Within a Week

Within the past week, four more members of the FDNY have died of 9/11-related illnesses. Supervising Fire Marshal John McCauley and firefighter Robert Reynolds passed away on Saturday. Firefighter Michael Verzi died Sunday, and Deputy Chief Vincent Mandala died two days after that. Each served at least twenty years with the fire department, according to service records.

North Carolina county, fire departments team with tech college to recruit more diverse firefighters

Wake County is teaming up with Wake Tech Community College and six other fire departments to recruit more people to work for them. The program is called “Career in a Year.” The goal is to increase racial and gender diversity within its fire departments. The county says right now 97 percent of staff with Wake County Fire Services are male.

June 2, 1983: 23 passengers die onboard Air Canada Flight 797 that caught fire, landed in Ohio

VIDEO: On June 2, 1983, 23 passengers died in a fire onboard Air Canada Flight 797. The flight was coming from Dallas, Texas, and heading to Toronto, Canada, when the cabin crew discovered smoke in a rear lavatory. According to the aircraft accident report, the crew attempted to extinguish the hidden fire before contacting air traffic control and declaring an emergency.

Dozens homeless after massive fire tears through Georgia apartment building

VIDEO: Almost three dozen people were left without a home after flames tore through a Clayton County apartment on Wednesday evening. Firefighters spent several hours battling the massive blaze. Iowa teacher runs 5k for 343 days straight to honor firefighters killed on 9/11

Williamsburg teacher and coach Austin Mullikin runs with a purpose and a cause every single day. Mulliken is running a 5k a day for 343 straight days in honor and remembrance of all 343 firefighters who died on 9/11. He said he wanted to remember them because we all made a promise 20 years ago to never forget, and he felt like he should do more.

Drone footage shows before and after look at damage caused by fire at Nebraska chemical plant

VIDEOS: A fire at a chemical production plant in downtown Omaha burned Monday night into Tuesday morning. KETV NewsWatch 7 drone footage and Google Earth images show the damage to the Nox Crete facility, located near 20th and Center streets. The first call for help at the facility came at 6:53 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick.

Firefighters crushed after kids wreck Illinois volunteer firehouse and leave it in ruins

VIDEO: Vandals destroyed the Homewood Acres volunteer firehouse over Memorial Day weekend – and the break-in happened in broad daylight. Sleep study focuses on Wisconsin firefighters

Firefighters are in the middle of a sleep study being conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Health and Human Performance Department. The goal of the study is to improve firefighter health. Smart watches worn by Superior crew members 24 hours a day, seven days a week are gathering data about their heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns at home and on the job.

Small department, big mission: Firefighters in Kentucky launch program to end bullying

The Junction City Fire Department is hoping to stop bullying starting with schools in Boyle County. Firefighters said after incidents in their own community and now the tragedy in Texas, the department is hoping to change lives, one student at a time. It is called “Firefighters Against Bullies.” The program was started in Pennsylvania by a group of firefighters hoping to draw awareness to schools and to build an anti-bullying program.

Remembering the Southwest Inn Fire: 9 years since Houston Fire Department's deadliest day in history

It was the single biggest loss of life in the history of the Houston Fire Department. Nine years ago, the Southwest Inn fire ultimately claimed the lives of five firefighters. The four firefighters who died on the scene were Robert Bebee, Robert Garner, Mathew Renaud, and Anne Sullivan. In March 2017, Captain Bill Dowling, who lost both of his legs in the fire, died of complications from the injuries sustained in the line of duty.
