Florida city says firefighters with waivers must shave

Nearly a dozen black firefighters in Jacksonville have been sent home for something they didn't do: shave. State rules require firefighters to have a clean-shaven face when they have to wear an oxygen mask. The rule falls in line with regulations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on wearing respirators.

Oregon fire chief resigns, sides with armed protesters

The Harney County fire chief resigned Wednesday because he says he no longer trusts the local government. Chris Briels stood next Ammon Bundy, the leader of an armed group that has taken over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, and announced he had turned in his resignation to county Judge Steve Grasty.

Owners of home where Ohio firefighter died won’t live there again

The owners of the Pater Avenue home where a Hamilton firefighter was killed Dec. 28 while battling a fire say they will never be able to return there even if repairs are made. “My wife won’t live there again, and I don’t blame her after the firefighter was killed there,” said Lester Parker, 66, of Hamilton.

Wyoming Chief Succumbs to Injuries from Brush Fire

Members of the Fremont County Fire Protection District are mourning the loss of Deputy Chief Clarence “Speed” Hartbank. The 45-year member of the department passed away Wednesday afternoon. Hartbank was commanding a Sept. 10 grass fire on Eight Mile Road. While he was surveying damage to a ground-level bunker, he fell through a hole and into the fire.

Portland, Oregon fire chief announces she'll retire in April

Portland Fire Chief Erin Janssens, who took the helm of the Fire & Rescue Bureau three and a half years ago, announced Wednesday she'll retire in April after nearly 28 years of city service. Janssens, 51, became the first woman to serve as chief in June 2012 when former city councilor Randy Leonard appointed her to the job.

New Hampshire chief injured after fire truck rolls over, takes down utility pole

VIDEO - Wires were knocked down and a state highway was closed after a fire truck rolled over Wednesday in Effingham. Route 153 was closed near Plantation Road after the fire truck rolled over onto its roof. Effingham resident Cindy Espie said she heard the crash. "I ran to the window and looked out, and I couldn't believe what I saw," Espie said.

Ohio city urged to place better controls on fire trust fund

2 children killed in Delaware fire; Firefighter forced to bail out window

VIDEO - Two young girls were killed and their mother was critically injured when flames tore through a home in Wilmington, Delaware Tuesday afternoon. Boston Fire Dept. commish blames former mayor for aging stations

Fire stations in the city are crumbling and in “poor condition,” with some even lacking functional smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors, according to a city audit. California governor proposes special unit to clean up Cal Fire

Following a series of scandals that have washed over California’s state fire department, Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed spending $4.4 million to launch a new unit to investigate personnel messes and prevent them from occurring in the future. My Fire Chief colleague, Billy Hayes, had a great article back in July examining which is more important for a successful officer — street smarts or book smarts, that is, training and experience or formal education. While the article weighed the pros and cons of each, Billy concluded that both had their place in the preparation of a firefighter to become an officer or a chief officer whether in a volunteer, combination or career department.

Public employee unions face major Supreme Court hurdle

The Supreme Court kicks off the new year Monday seemingly poised to deal a major blow to the nation's public employee unions by wiping out, or at least weakening, a legal precedent that dates back nearly four decades. If the justices' recent rulings against organized labor are any guide, a deeply divided court is likely to make it harder for unions representing teachers, police and firefighters, and other government workers to collect fees from non-members.
