Nebraska captain sues city, chiefs over alleged retaliation

A Lincoln Fire and Rescue captain has sued the city and the fire department's top brass alleging they retaliated against him for reporting harassment of recruits in 2011 and that he continues to get passed up for promotions because of it. Colorado Springs Fire Chief Riley to retire after 35-year career

Accomplishments under his tenure include bringing in the 4th Battalion Squad No. 11, constructing a new fire station, formalizing a labor and management initiative with the IAFF Local No. 5 and leading the department to successful accreditation compliance. Suit filed to halt interim fire chief contract in Kansas

Topeka city manager Jim Colson’s move to look out of state for an interim fire chief now faces a lawsuit. R.E. “Tuck” Duncan filed a lawsuit Monday in Shawnee County District Court on behalf of state representative and former city councilman John Alcala, claiming the move violated city ordinance. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and injunction to block the city from implementing a contract with Goodyear, Ariz.

New Jersey town rallying to help fire chief rebuild Sandy-damaged house after heart attack

Mantoloking's fire chief is out of the woods after suffering a heart attack while battling a stubborn blaze Saturday night, but his anticipated extensive recovery is going to prevent him from getting back to his Hurricane Sandy-damaged home, a family friend said. Florida assistant fire chief accused of theft resigns

A Clearwater Fire and Rescue assistant fire chief who was charged with retail theft last week has officially resigned his position, according to the human resources department. Ron Gemsheim, 52, whose annual annual salary was $85,000, did not list a reason for his resignation that went into effect at 5 p.

In emergencies, people may trust robots too much for their own safety, a new study suggests. New audio reveals trapped Missouri firefighter fighting for his life in fatal fire

For the first time Monday night, we are hearing the voice of a firefighter trapped inside a Raytown apartment fire that killed a boy and his grandmother. FDNY’s misleading response times make them seem faster, union charges

New Jersey fire chief suffers heart attack during large house blaze

Two firefighters were injured in a large blaze on Channel Lane Saturday night, including the borough's fire chief, who suffered a heart attack. Police arrived at the home at around 6:15 p.m. after receiving a report of heavy black smoke and flames emanating from the house. When officers arrived, the home was engulfed in flames, according to the Mantoloking Police Department.

California firefighters sue district over alleged overtime miscalculations

Nearly four dozen current and former Southern Marin firefighters have filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming they were shorted of full overtime compensation. The firefighters allege the Southern Marin Fire Protection District violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by understating the regular pay rate upon which overtime is calculated.

Bill Would Create National Firefighter Cancer Registry

U.S. Representatives Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) and Richard Hanna (R-NY) today introduced a bill that would create a national cancer registry for firefighters diagnosed with the deadly disease. Firefighters are exposed to a range of harmful toxins and research has indicated that there is a strong connection between firefighting and an increased risk for several major cancers such as testicular, stomach, multiple myeloma and brain cancers.

Oklahoma Firefighter Struck By Brush Truck

A Ponca City firefighter is recovering after he was accidentally run over by a fire truck. Lieutenant Lyle Crandall was headed to pick up a brush pumper at the fire station when he was hit by the fire engine. He was immediately treated at the scene and was taken by medi flight to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

FDNY prepared to pick up slack after private ambulance company files for bankruptcy

TransCare ambulances will soon stop responding to 911 calls across two of their busiest boroughs –– Manhattan and the Bronx. The private ambulance company filed for Chapter 7 Wednesday, taking 27 ambulances out of service, which means 81 shifts need to be filled. FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the department is prepared to pick up the slack.

Florida department defends decision to not respond to fire, says it might happen again

Liberty Volunteer Fire District Assistant Chief Tony Roy isn’t apologizing for ordering a tanker truck to not respond to a Walton County Fire Rescue call for assistance fighting a house fire. Fire chief: Fighting blaze at Illinois station an 'emotional experience'

Clad in blue jeans and hooded sweatshirts, Stockton firefighters today battled a blaze that hit them where they live. A witness reported seeing smoke coming from the village’s fire station around 11 a.m. Within minutes, volunteer firefighters were on scene and emergency responders from nearby agencies had been called to help save the headquarters of the Stockton Fire Department.

Tennessee firefighter falls through attic battling house fire

A veteran firefighter is recovering today from injuries he received early Thursday while battling a house fire in Tullahoma, Tenn. At 2:50 a.m. Thursday, firefighters found light smoke coming from the home at 309 Decherd Street, Tullahoma Fire Chief Richard Shasteen said in a statement on the incident.
