More Than 3,600 Public Safety Agencies SubscribedMore than 3,600 public safety agencies across the country have now joined FirstNet. That’s a nearly 50% increase in the number of agencies subscribing to the nationwide public safety communications platform in less than 2 months. With more than 250,000 connections on FirstNet, first responders from federal, state, local and tribal public safety agencies continue to turn to FirstNet for the communications capabilities they need, especially during emergencies and large events.

Off-duty D.C. firefighter leaps into action to rescue man from house fire

As a career firefighter in Washington, D.C., and a 32-year volunteer with the Independent Hose Co. in Frederick, Jeff Scire has run into his fair share of burning buildings. He usually has close to 50 pounds of safety and breathing equipment to protect him, but none of it was available Monday afternoon as Scire found himself facing a smoke-filled basement less than a mile from his home on Indian Springs Road.

Pioneering San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White to retire next spring

San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, the first woman ever to lead the department and the longest-serving big-city fire chief in the country, told her department on Monday she’s retiring. She has agreed to stay on the job until spring to give Mayor London Breed time to find her replacement. Her ideal retirement date, she said, is May 5, 2019, a “small tribute” to the late Mayor Ed Lee, who would have turned 67 that day.

Oregon firefighters healing from emotional trauma after shooting at house fire

The first firefighters to arrive on scene of a house fire in Springfield where they were ambushed by a gunman are on leave while a Peer Support Team helps them and the department heal from the trauma. Battalion Chief Mike Caven with the Eugene Springfield Fire Department is praising those five firefighters for their efforts, calling them heroes.

Pennsylvania city needs 30 days to provide fire chief's son's application

Citing the “extensive nature” of the request, the City of Scranton needs 30 days to decide if it will provide the employment application of the city fire chief’s son. The Times-Tribune requested a copy of Jacob DeSarno’s employment application earlier this month through the Right To Know Law, after the applicant’s father, Fire Chief Patrick DeSarno, directed the paper to do so.

New fire trucks likely coming to Ohio department amid concerns about temporary station closings

Toledo firefighters worry they might have to temporarily close a firehouse if one more back-up fire engine winds up in the repair shop, but councilmen hope a slight budget reconfiguration will help alleviate those fears. Iowa fire chief dies while responding to combine fire

The firefighter who died while responding to a combine fire has been identified. According to Shelby County Emergency Management officials, 58-year-old Tom Henrich died Saturday afternoon after he fell ill while on a call. He was the Earling Fire and Rescue Department chief. Florida governor issues ultimatum to Verizon: Give me a plan to restore service, and treat customers fairly

Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued another rebuke of Verizon, telling the cell provider in a terse press release that he expects the company to give him a plan today to restore service to the areas hit by Hurricane Michael, and that all cell providers should waive bills for October. The press release was addressed to all cell phone providers, but it singled out Verizon, which has struggled to restore service in Bay County, where Michael made landfall.

Controversial FDNY official removed from senior position

A top FDNY official in charge of assessing aspiring firefighters has been hosed out of that role, The Post has learned. Margaret “Peg” Quinn-Puppa, deputy director of the FDNY’s candidate investigation division, “is assuming other duties in human resources,” said department spokesman Jim Long. Florida firefighter dies while clearing hurricane debris from Hurricane Michael

Gulf County Fire Coordinator Brad Price, firefighter and paramedic, was helping to clear some of the debris Hurricane Michael left behind Thursday when a tree fell on his tractor. Arizona firefighter dies during training

A Saint David Fire District firefighter died in training Wednesday. According to Saint David Fire District, 36-year-old Joshua Eugin died during a multi-department training exercise. Eugin was taking part in a "blackout drill," in which firefighters simulate rescuing victims inside a dark structure with fake smoke.

Ohio department building new fire stations to reduce cancer cases for firefighters

Keeping firefighters safe is top of mind for city leaders. After a Columbus firefighter lost his battle with cancer a few weeks ago, a new fire station in the far east side of town is being built with firefighters safety and health in mind. Fire station 35 in Blacklick is being constructed with decontamination showers, better exhaust ventilation, and a specific room where firefighters go to after a scene to decontaminate their gear.

California Fire Department Welcomes 17 Babies in One Year

Firefighter suffered seizure when FDNY fire truck jumped curb, hit vehicles

VIDEO/PHOTO - A firefighter is expected to survive after an FDNY fire truck jumped a curb and slammed into parked vehicles in Brooklyn. The accident happened just after 6 p.m. Wednesday at East New York Avenue and St. Marks Avenue in Brownsville. Sources say the truck had been stopped at a traffic light on East New York Avenue when the driver suffered some sort of seizure.

Recently, the American Ambulance Association (AAA) reached out to local fire and emergency service leaders asking them to sign on to a newly proposed national EMS cost reporting system. The leaders of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), and the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association (Metro Chiefs) ask that fire service leaders not sign on to this effort.
