Chronic problems at the Detroit Fire Department are catching up to homeowners in the form of higher insurance rates. Detroit already has the highest rates in the state. Now, they’re rising again for many, after a group that analyzes communities’ fire protection for insurance companies downgraded the city.

Halting firefighter cancer starts with clean PPE

Unfortunately, too many firefighters and officers are not getting it. And "it" is that firefighters face an increased cancer risk compared with the general public. In its 2013 whitepaper "Taking Action Against Cancer in the Fire Service," the Firefighter Cancer Support Network reported that in 2006 researchers at the University of Cincinnati published their meta-analysis of 32 studies of cancer among firefighters.

Critic says cookies chipping away at California fire district's finances

Many residents are keeping an eye on East Contra Costa Fire District's financial struggles, but one of them recently took the scrutiny to a new level by chiding its chief for purchasing $23.96 worth of chocolate chip cookies. "She just didn't think we should be buying treats for the firefighters," said Chief Hugh Henderson of the woman who took him to task after spotting four $5 boxes of cookies among the groceries he was loading into his truck from the Safeway store in Discovery Bay.

FDNY will graduate one of most diverse classes in 150-year history

The FDNY will graduate one of the most diverse classes in its 150-year history Friday — and bring the number of women on the force to a record high. Four women will cross the stage at Queens College on Friday to become probationary members of the Bravest. When they do, the FDNY will have 49 female firefighters — more than it has ever had since the agency was formed in 1865.

First-responders to Oklahoma City bombing responsible for raising thousands for memorial

Hartford Firefighters To Get New Breathing Apparatus

Wisconsin firefighter accused of crashing truck during joyride, resigns

A Mosinee firefighter accused of taking a fire engine on an early morning joyride and then crashing it after a night out drinking has resigned and his chief has requested that no criminal charges be filed in the case. Connecticut town votes to expand pool of firefighter applicants to enhance diversification

In an effort to enhance diversification at the fire department, the personnel board on Wednesday voted to set aside the so-called “rule of three” to allow the fire chief to choose from a broader list of qualified candidates. Following some strong opinions voiced by residents in opposition, however, the board tabled a separate request from Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio for authorization to hire as a probationary recruit a New London resident who had worked with the fire department but who did not make it onto the eligibility list.

Fleeing man tries to hit Ohio firefighter, strikes firetruck

A Mansfield man was arrested Wednesday after police alleged he tried to run over a firefighter and caused two crashes while fleeing from authorities. Detroit city council confirms new fire commissioner

On the heels of a historically safe Angels' Night weekend, the Detroit City Council today confirmed Mayor Mike Duggan's choice for executive fire commissioner, Eric Jones. Committee restores Green Bay firefighter jobs

Four firefighter positions were restored in Green Bay’s 2016 budget by the city’s joint personnel and finance committee on Tuesday. Pay hike approved for Los Angeles County firefighters

Los Angeles County supervisors today unanimously approved a 10 percent pay raise for firefighters, deputy sheriffs, criminalists, correction officers, coroner investigators, probation officers, supervising child support officers and deputy district attorneys. The raise will be spread out over three years, according to labor pacts the county reached with unions representing those workers.
