The last thing Fire Chief Brian Rooney might have wanted was a City Hall reception, but members of the department he led for 10 years insisted on a chance to say thank you. So Rooney, his wife Adrianna, and their two grown children greeted well-wishers and listen to a proclamation declaring Friday “Chief Brian Rooney Day” in Bridgeport.

Former Illinois fire chief comes out of retirement to lead Florida department

Ken Fustin, who retired as Springfield's fire chief less than a year ago, has been hired to lead the fire department in Port Orange, Florida. The city manager of Port Orange, a city of about 59,000 just south of Daytona Beach in eastern Florida, announced the hiring at Tuesday night's city council meeting, according to a report in the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Ohio legislation would allow first responders to treat pets

A bill that will allow first responders to provide medical treatment to dogs and cats has unanimously passed out of the General Assembly and is now headed to Gov. John Kasich’s desk to sign. Pets who are often considered a part of a family “and they should receive treatment if necessary or life-threatening situations,” said Meg Stephenson, executive director of the Animal Friends Humane Society.

Maine fire chief charged with arson resigns

Old Orchard Beach is beginning the search for a new fire chief following the resignation of Ricky Plummer, who has been charged with arson in connection to a seven-alarm fire in April. Plummer, 59, of Biddeford, was arrested on May 7. He is accused of starting a brush and woods fire on April 15 that spanned about 40 acres near Jones Creek.

Suspect climbs tree to avoid arrest, gets hosed down by Washington firefighters

A domestic violence suspect who climbed a tree to avoid arrest early Thursday finally came down hours later after firefighters sprayed him with water, authorities said. The incident began at about 4:30 a.m. in the 800 block of 13th Street when a woman called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend had just broken into her home, assaulted her, and fled the residence, said Shari Ireton of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

Georgia firefighter arrested, fired for alleged $20 firehouse theft

A Cherokee County firefighter was arrested and fired after admitting to stealing $20 from his firehouse, the Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. Matthew Knowles, 30, of Woodstock, was charged with theft and released from jail after posting $720 bond Wednesday afternoon, Lt. Jay Baker said. Knowles was the second Cherokee firefighter charged with a crime during the past week, and both were fired from the department.

Colorado Assistant Fire Chief Fined Over ‘Close Call’ Incident

A Denver Assistant Fire Chief has been fined 24 hours of pay in connection with a 2012 “close call” incident that nearly cost a Denver firefighter his life. Denver’s Department of Safety issued the order April 22, docking Assistant Denver Fire Chief Dave McGrail the equivalent of three days’ pay for failing to ensure a written report on the 2012 incident was disseminated to department members.

South Carolina firefighter accused of throwing helmet, shattering windshield at accident scene

A volunteer firefighter is on administrative leave after he allegedly threw his helmet at a vehicle while directing traffic. The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office charged the 20-year-old firefighter with a misdemeanor of malicious injury to personal property. He was later released on a $500 personal recognizance bond.

Retired Las Vegas fire chief selected to be Portland's next fire chief

New Hampshire firefighter loses battle with cancer

A local firefighter and paramedic lost his battle with cancer on Sunday morning. Kyle Jameson, 34, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in April of 2015, after a routine physical examination. He underwent chemotherapy treatment, which helped eradicate the cancer from his lymphatic system, but it spread deeper into his bones.

Aurora, Colo. firefighters have highest number of calls in the nation, union says

The Aurora Fire Department — having already racked up more than $2 million in overtime last year — can claim the title of having the busiest firefighters of any department in the nation, according to an industry report. Police say 4 Pennsylvania volunteer firefighters called in false alarms for thrills

Four volunteer firefighters are facing charges after police say they called to report fake emergencies.
