There were three standing ovations in the unusually crowded chambers at Greensburg City Hall during Monday night's council meeting. The first came as Thomas Bell took the oath of office to become the city's first new fire chief since 1953. “Every kid, growing up, wants to be a firefighter,” Bell said.

California man man whose book on fire/arson investigation is most studied, to retire

When it comes to fire forensics, 33-year Vallejo resident John DeHaan, literally wrote the book — the textbook that is most used nationwide by those going into the field of arson investigations. First responders who worked on the dusty, smoldering pile of debris in the aftermath of the Twin Towers’ collapse 15 years ago have begun showing signs of debilitating nerve damage, a team of Long Island doctors has found for the first time. The research, led by Dr. Marc Wilkenfeld at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, is the third of his investigations to link World Trade Center dust to nerve damage, but it is the first beyond his statistical studies to confirm it in a small group of patients.

Colorado fire department tracks lives saved in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests

Aug. 22, 2016, is the day Andrea Shipp and Jennifer Goerlitz thought their little girl would not live another day. "Nobody knew what the outcome was going to be," Goerlitz said. "I think Andrea and I have lived in this denial stage for a while." If it hadn't been for the rapid response of Longmont firefighters and paramedics, Clara's mothers don't think their daughter — who has been diagnosed with congenital myopathy, chronic respiratory insufficiency and gastroparesis, or stomach paralysis — would have survived a cardiac arrest.

Column: Where Has the Pride Gone? What Can We Do to Get it Back?

The fire service is and always has been built on pride, tradition, brotherhood and service. There are many examples throughout the history of the fire service of all of these characteristics. There are also examples recently of a decline in these characteristics, specifically pride. What happened to always honoring what those who came before us built? What happened to always leaving the job better than you found it? When did the fire service stop being a calling and become just a job? Being a firefighter is a privilege and it seems many in the fire service have forgotten what the fire service stands for.

State chastises Massachusetts selectmen over meeting notice and minutes from fire chief interviews

The state attorney general's office has determined that selectmen did not violate the Open Meeting Law in their selection of a fire chief last spring. However, the attorney general's office said that minutes from an open session May 16, when the board interviewed candidates for fire chief, lacked sufficient detail and that the minutes show the board wrongly kept secret how they determined the top candidate.

Column: What a President Trump means for fire, EMS

With more questions than answers surrounding a Trump presidency, these seven items are likely to be front of mind for fire and EMS providers. I have closely followed the presidential campaign over the past 18 months. Today as I review the results, read the analysis and scroll through the cries of despair and boasts of triumph on Facebook, I am reminded of the EMS adage, "Don't treat the monitor, treat the patient.
