Retired California firefighter describes attempt to stop London stabbing suspect

A retired San Jose firefighter who tried to grab the man who stabbed to death a retired teacher in London this week says anyone would have tried to stop the attack. Martin Hoenisch, 59, said he was just a tourist who knew what to do in a dire situation – namely try to subdue a man wielding a knife Wednesday in London’s Russell Square, near the British Museum.

Man sues Kentucky fire department over $1 annual lease agreement

The Isonville Volunteer Fire Department is facing a lawsuit by an Elliott County man over a lack of payments in a $1 per year deal with the previous property owner. Roger Howard, who lives near the fire department, recently bought the property that includes the fire department’s garage. The garage has been on the property since 1995, and the fire department later entered into an agreement with Willis Lyon.

New York state cites two departments in death of teen firefighter

New York state has issued 14 violations to two fire departments regarding the Dec. 19 line-of-duty death of Mount Marion volunteer firefighter Lt. Jack Rose. The Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau of the state Department of Labor issued the violations in early May. The Times Herald-Record obtained the reports on the two departments through a request under the Freedom of Information Law.

Dallas Fire-Rescue receives 21 armor-plated vests

Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics now have access to ballistic kits that can protect against rounds from high-powered rifles, like those used in the ambush on Dallas police officers last month. The kits are part of a modification to the active-shooter policy for DFR that will ultimately include collaboration with DPD.

Kentucky fire department suing to get repossessed firetrucks back

The Warfield Volunteer Fire Department has filed a lawsuit in Martin County, Kentucky, to get its repossessed firetrucks back. In May, First Government Lease Co. of Northfield, Ill., took the vehicles. Paul Graver, doing business as First lease Company and AA Repo East, LLC of Lexington, Ky., are named as defendants in the lawsuit.

Former Pennsylvania firefighter admits guilt in firehouse hostage incident

A former volunteer firefighter has admitted to holding four colleagues hostage at the LaMott Fire Company in Cheltenham while armed with a handgun a day after he was expelled by the company’s board of governors. Fire at home of New York firefighter who received racial threats under investigation

A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in the apartment of a volunteer firefighter who received a threatening and racist letter earlier this week. Firefighters were called early Wednesday afternoon to the blaze at an apartment house at 1096 Oliver St. in North Tonawanda where Kenneth Walker lives. When the fire was discovered, Walker said that no one was in his apartment, where he lives with his wife and their two children.

Massachusetts fire departments sending state inconsistent response times

California fire district takes no action on acting chief as controversy swirls

The Montezuma Fire Protection District commission, confirmed to be under investigation by the Solano County District Attorney’s Office for possible open meeting law violations, met Monday to appoint an acting fire chief but took no action. Cal Fire official says illegal unattended campfire sparked deadly Soberanes Fire

The massive Soberanes Fire was caused by someone who lit an illegal campfire, Cal Fire unit chief Brennan Blue said Tuesday. The wildfire sparked in Garrapata State Park on July 22 before it burned more than 44,300 acres, destroyed 57 homes, and led to the death of a bulldozer operator on Green Ridge.

New York City firefighters get 6 percent pension boost

Firefighters and fire officers who retired over the last 12 months will collect pensions averaging $119,866 a year, according to data released Tuesday. The Empire Center, a government watchdog, said its analysis of 15,556 former FDNY members determined that the pensions of new retirees — which already exceed six figures — would be increasing another 6 percent.

Undiagnosed heart condition killed North Carolina firefighter who died in line of duty

When Joshua Warren collapsed while exercising while on duty back in June, his death stunned fellow firefighters because they said he was a man who was health conscious. The reason he died also has them stunned. “Really couldn’t believe it,” said Mike Turner, an assistant fire chief at East Lincoln Fire Department.

Omaha Fire Dept. battalion chief on paid leave over Facebook content

Omaha Fire Department Interim Chief Dan Olsen announced Monday that Battalion Chief Joseph Salcedo has been placed on paid administrative leave for sharing "inappropriate content on his personal Facebook page." New York firefighter denied pain and suffering for loss of leg in accident

A six-member jury has ruled against a volunteer firefighter who sued for pain and suffering from the loss of his leg after being hit by a car as he rushed to an emergency call in Seaford. On Nov. 14, 2010, Steven Hochman was hit by a car driven by Kevin McCarthy, of Seaford, a retired NYPD officer. Besides McCarthy, Hochman sued his fire captain at the time, Thomas Cattone, saying Cattone had parked his pickup truck on the sidewalk across the street from the firehouse, blocking Hochman from seeing the oncoming vehicle, and the driver from seeing him step from the sidewalk as he hurried to the firehouse.
