Wisconsin fire department EMT paralyzed in 2003 ambulance crash dies

A former Mosinee Fire Department EMT has died - 14 years after he suffered crippling injuries when his ambulance rolled over, according to the fire department. Matt Deicher died Saturday. The ambulance rolled over on state Highway 39 in Marathon County in July 2003 as Deicher and two other EMTs were transporting a patient to the hospital.

South Dakota fire chief finds positive outlook amid tough times

Brad Goodroad found a love for fighting fires while working construction. He developed an interest after talking to another construction worker’s father, who was a full-time firefighter. Growing up in a small South Dakota town with a volunteer fire department, Goodroad hadn’t ever considered firefighting as a full-time job.

First FDNY EMT infected by HIV while on duty honored 20 years after her death

Twenty years after the city of New York turned its back on Tracy Allen Lee, the FDNY emergency medical technician was honored Monday for the selfless act that ultimately took her life. In November of 1989, Lee was barely two years into her career when she treated a patient with Aids while responding to a call.

Judge questions Rhode Island town manager about firefighter’s firing

A Superior Court judge questioned new East Greenwich Town Manager Gayle Corrigan Friday about the circumstances surrounding her hiring and her decision to fire a firefighter because he lacked paperwork showing he was certified. Judge Susan E. McGuirl asked Corrigan if she knew the Town Council planned to name her acting town manager before the council made the move in executive session June 19.

Man who fatally shot Maryland firefighter answering a 911 call dies after stroke

The man who fatally shot a Prince George’s County firefighter answering a 911 call died last week, according to his attorney and his sister. Darrell Lumpkin, 63, had suffered a stroke and was in the hospital for a few weeks before being released, said Lumpkin’s attorney, Brian K. McDaniel. About a week later, Lumpkin died of a heart condition, McDaniel said.

Controversy over fire department's 'rolling bypasses' continues in Delaware city

As Buster Snow watched flames jump from his burning SUV to the back of his and his neighbor's adjoining home, the 42-year-old Wilmington man wondered where the fire department was. He remembers seeing ambulance workers and police officers watching the fire that afternoon, but Engine No. 3, the Wilmington Fire Department pumper engine stationed less than five blocks from his home, was nowhere in sight.

New Jersey state overseers ask judge to reconsider Atlantic City firefighter ruling

State overseers of the city have asked a a Superior Court judge to reconsider his shutdown of a move to lay off 50 city firefighters, saying the city can’t afford their salaries. The state filed its motion last week, asking Judge Julio Mendez to reconsider his late August ruling preventing the layoffs.

North Carolina fire chief hangs up his helmet after 50 years

Don Oliver was just 2 years old when he had his first encounter with firefighters, but it was a pairing that lasted a lifetime. It all started when Oliver’s mother had the toddler stand near the Christmas tree for a New Year’s Eve photograph in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. Oliver said he decided to imitate his dad by flicking one of the bulbs on the tree while his mother changed the film.

Las Vegas mayor ‘shocked’ at claims of firehouse sex

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said Friday she was “shocked” at another round of allegations of sex in a city firehouse because the issue was “very clearly addressed” earlier this year. Months after claims of sexual misconduct, city officials are investigating allegations that a firefighter violated department policy in August by having sex at a fire station.

Michigan's oldest operating fire department looking to get global recognition

VIDEO - A northern Michigan fire department may soon get some worldwide recognition. The city of Manistee Fire Department is the oldest operating firehouse in the state of Michigan. Firefighters and city officials have now applied to the Guinness World They hope to get recognized as the ‘Oldest Continuously Manned Fire Station' in the world.

Former New York fire chief files suit against city

Former Canandaigua Fire Chief Mark Marentette has filed a complaint against the City of Canandaigua, saying his constitutional right to a fair hearing was violated. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages that include compensation for the loss of reputation and back and future pay. Marentette, who was terminated from his position in April, is also seeking reinstatement as Fire Chief.

Fired Rhode Island firefighter testifies he’s victim of retaliation

A fired East Greenwich firefighter testified Wednesday that he learned of his termination during an emotional late-night call from his brother. James Perry said he was in bed when his brother, William Perry, called his cellphone around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 19. “He said, ‘I got an email you were terminated tonight,’” James Perry said.

California county fire union backs opposition to public safety tax

San Bernardino County Fire’s union has put undisclosed sums of money into the campaign opposing the city’s proposed half-cent sales tax for public safety, the Daily Press has learned. The contribution by Professional Firefighters Union, Local 935 — confirmed recently by the organization’s president and by the taxpayer group leading the anti-effort — forges a potentially awkward dynamic moving forward since the union represents one of two reported agency benefactors of the November ballot measure.

Smoke Alarms Installed by Missouri Firefighters Help Residents Escape Fire

Several escaped a burning apartment home Thursday morning, just three months after Springfield firefighters installed smoke alarms in the structure.  The smoke alarms sounded, notifying residents in two first-floor apartment of a fire that engulfed the second floor apartment Thursday morning. During a safety canvass in June, firefighters installed a new smoke alarm and replaced a dead battery in another alarm in that building.

One dead in crash involving Kentucky fire truck; 4 firefighters injured

PHOTOS - One person is dead in a crash involving a car and a Louisville Fire & Rescue fire truck. The crash happened on Algonquin Parkway near McCloskey Avenue about 8:45 a.m. Thursday. Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell says the fire truck was headed to an emergency with lights and sirens, when it collided with a green car.

Indianapolis firefighters 'stupefied' that motorists keep driving over water supply lines during an actual fire

VIDEO - The house fire was a familiar scenario for Indianapolis firefighters. An electrical appliance sparked a blaze in a two-story home. One person got out, but another was trapped. Death of Kentucky firefighter creates debate over line of duty deaths

The passing of a Louisville firefighter is creating debate over what counts as a line of duty death. Sergeant Tim Groft, a 15-year veteran of Louisville's fire department, passed away Saturday from an extended battle with cancer. "He served them with honor, pride, loyalty and dedication," Louisville Division of Fire Chief Gregory Frederick said.

The cast of an upcoming film highlighting the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots paid tribute to first responders by giving an inside look at the unsung heroes. The cast, including Taylor Kitsch, Miles Teller, Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Connelly, teamed up to speak of the bravery the Hotshots showed when they battled Yarnell Hill wildfire that blazed through Arizona in 2013.
