Oregon fire recruits restore lifesaving net, present it to chief

California firefighter sues city over alleged sexual harassment

A San Bruno firefighter is suing the city and several members of its fire department on grounds he was sexually harassed and retaliated against when he complained. Filed in San Mateo County Superior Court on June 18, the lawsuit says the firefighter, identified as 17-year veteran Jon Priolo, was subjected to numerous comments and jokes suggesting he was gay between 2010 and September 2015.

Five dead after shooting at Maryland newspaper

Five people were killed on Thursday when a man with a shotgun opened fire in the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, in a "targeted attack," police said. The suspect had sued the paper six years ago and lost. "This person was prepared to shoot people. His intent was to cause harm," Bill Krampf, deputy police chief of Anne Arundel County, said at a news conference Thursday evening.

Connecticut firefighter suffers serious injuries to face extinguishing fire caused by lightning

Town firefighters responded to fires potentially caused by lightning Thursday, one of which seriously injured a firefighter, officials said. Around 6:40 p.m., the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call for a structure fire in the 1000 block of Mill Hill Road. Several units were dispatched to the residence and the first units on scene reported smoke coming from a large detached garage.

New York prosecutors to decide if charges justified in FDNY firefighter brawl

Bronx prosecutors are getting into the mix to decide if charges are justified in a drunken brawl between firefighters, the Daily News has learned. Earlier this month, a full-on firefighter fracas exploded between off-duty uniformed smoke eaters when someone was called the N-word. The fight happened in Billy’s Bar, near Yankee Stadium, between the Bronx’s Rescue Company 3 and members of Ladder Company 49 and Engine Company 68, The News reported — adding that no arrests were made at the time.

Board Prevents Firing of 'Obese' Massachusetts Firefighter

The city’s Retirement Board has blocked Fire Chief Brian Moriarty from firing a 250-pound firefighter who the chief alleged is unfit for duty because of his weight. Morarity directed firefighter Alfredo Sanchez, a 17-year-veteran of the force, to retire when Sanchez returned from an 18-month disability leave after tearing a ligament in his knee.

Virginia firefighters concerned about department’s mandatory overtime policy

Dozens of firefighters attended the Newport News City Council meeting on Tuesday hoping to be heard. Donnie Lewis, President of the Newport News Firefighter's Association, says a mandatory overtime policy is exhausting city firefighters. “Our firefighters are the best in the world, I think. Philadelphia firefighter, 62, dies after training exercise injury

A 34-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department died Wednesday at Aria Torresdale Hospital, two days after he was critically injured at the Fire Academy in Holmesburg. Lt. Benny Hutchins, 62, who joined the Fire Department in 1984, was participating in a training exercise at the academy at 5200 Pennypack St.

Texas fire cadet dies after unknown medical emergency, officials say

An Austin Fire cadet died at the hospital on Tuesday, according to the a tweet sent Tuesday evening from the department. The cadet was identified as Devon Coney. "Immense sadness over the passing of one of our best and brightest, Devon Coney, who died earlier this evening at a local hospital. Devon’s positive attitude, ever-present kindness and joy, and megawatt smile are just a few of the many things we’ll miss," Austin Fire tweeted Tuesday evening.

Ohio fire department puts new purple fire engine in service

PHOTO - The Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department’s new purple fire engine is in service. In fact, it was christened Wednesday when it was called to a minor traffic accident on Ohio 7 at Hanover Street, Lt. Justin Matz said. The custom pumper truck, which cost $488,616, was manufactured by Sutphen in Columbus, Ohio.

Over 2,000 firefighters are battling the Pawnee Fire in Lake County, which has grown to 13,000 acres. So far, it is 25 percent contained. Ohio Fire Chief reflects on 34-year career

Former Philadelphia Fire Commissioner William Richmond dies

William C. Richmond, who was Philadelphia’s fire commissioner during the 1985 MOVE bombing, died Monday, June 25, at home. He was 86. A death notice posted by his family did not provide a cause. Mr. Richmond was a Korean War veteran and served as a Philadelphia police officer for two years before beginning a 28-year career at the Fire Department, rising from firefighter to commissioner, a position he held from 1984 to 1988.

More than a year after a Houston firefighter died of cancer, her husband is fighting for benefits he says his wife earned. It appeared he even had the fire chief on his side. New York firefighters recover prosthetic leg worth $127,000

On Sunday, the Corinth Fire Department reunited a lost prosthetic leg with its owner. The original call came in Thursday from Saratoga County Dispatch -- a male amputee had lost his prosthetic leg -- valued at $127,000 -- off the back of his jetski in the Hudson River. "He said when he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident it truly affected him, but after he so called lost his leg for a second time, it almost affected him more.
