Massachusetts firefighter trapped in five-alarm apartment blaze dies

A Worcester firefighter died Sunday shortly after he was pulled from a burning apartment building on Lowell Street. Fire Chief Michael Lavoie identified the victim as Firefighter Christopher Roy, 36, a 2½-year member of the department. He lived in Shrewsbury and leaves a 9-year-old daughter. The fire was reported at 3:58 a.

Damage to new Maine ladder truck blamed on lack of attention, training

Firefighters weren’t paying attention and hadn’t been properly trained when a brand new $1.1 million fire truck was seriously damaged and put out of service during a training exercise in October, according to a report released Friday. Fire Chief James Wilson has been directed to immediately establish new standard operating guidelines that also were found lacking after the truck’s 107-foot aerial ladder hit an overhead power line, sending an electrical current that destroyed the truck’s complex wiring systems and sparked a fire on the right front tire.

Pennsylvania firefighters union to appeal demotion of ex-assistant chief

The union representing city firefighters will challenge an order dismissing an unfair labor practice complaint filed over the demotion of former assistant chief Thomas Makar. The complaint alleged Makar, an assistant chief for 12 years, did not retain his appointed position because of his criticism of the city on social media.

Off-duty FDNY firefighter dies in road-rage attack

A minor traffic dispute turned deadly for an off-duty firefighter Sunday when he and another driver pulled off the road to sort it out and the raging motorist killed him, law-enforcement sources said. Michigan firefighters battle fire at own station; 3 firefighters injured

The Blissfield Township Fire Department caught on fire around 6:30 this morning. According to the Blissfield Fire Chief Dale Fruchui, there was heavy smoke and fire in the attic and in the truck bay. Riga, Palmyra, Deerfield and Madison Township Fire Departments were called to assist. Three firefighters were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but we're told they're okay.

North Carolina firefighter cancer deaths rarely classified as line of duty

When Charlotte firefighter Seth Tinsley died at 34 of brain cancer in 2016, his name went on the International Association of Fire Fighter’s memorial in Colorado Springs, Colo., for those lost in the line of duty. Mysterious firefighter contract change costly for Rhode Island city

An unauthorized practice has overpaid retiring Warwick firefighters for accumulations of vacation time since 2015, a Providence Journal investigation shows. Asked about documents and information developed by The Journal, Mayor Joseph J. Solomon said Friday he was ordering a halt to the practice. Solomon accused his predecessor, Mayor Scott Avedisian, of signing a contract document that enhanced the vacation perk even though the change was never approved by the City Council, as required.

FDNY Chief relieved of duties over alleged 'inappropriate behavior,' will fight for his job: sources

Chief of Department James Leonard, the top uniformed officer in the FDNY, has been relieved of his duties and put on modified assignment pending a review of possible “inappropriate behavior,” a spokesman said Thursday. Iowa city's ISO rating at risk; Firefighters say PSO program could have negative impact

The city of Cedar Falls is under threat of having its ISO rating, which impacts insurance rates for property owners, lowered from a 3 to a 4. But the city has been working throughout 2018 to keep the rating as is. The Insurance Service Office informed Cedar Falls it is prepared to drop the rating, but has given the city until February to make improvements to retain its level 3 classification.

New Jersey Township committee approves $500,000 settlement with former fire chief

The township’s former fire chief and director of emergency services will receive a $500,000 payment to end a civil lawsuit alleging his job was eliminated because of his political activities. The Township Committee narrowly approved a resolution authorizing the payment as part of a settlement with former fire chief Jason Carty, whose position was eliminated in April 2016 after less than two years on the job.

L.A. County supervisors to spend $4.5 million studying 'new realities' in fire service

Judge orders Delaware State Police to turn over full report on firefighter's fatal helicopter fall
